Tournament Description
This year's tournament will be hosted once again by the Selkirk Badminton Club and their wonderful volunteers. This tournament is a staple on the MBA calendar and is a very exciting one for a majority of athletes. This tournament provides age-appropriate competition so that adults and seniors alike can not only compete with players in their similar age-group but also so that they can socialize in a more comfortable setting.
The Selkirk Badminton Club typically hosts some snacks throughout the tournament, however please be sure to bring your own food and snacks just in case you get hungry.
There will be 3 separate age categories – 30+, 45+ & 60+ which will hopefully separate people into appropriate levels of capability, however strong players are welcome to enter into lower age categories if they feel like the challenge. Players however cannot move up an age category (think opposite of juniors!).
One last thing – starting with last year's results the winners will have their names engraved on a new trophy dedicated to the Manitoba Seniors & Masters. There will be a separate trophy for 30+ and 45+, and one of them will be named "in honour of Barry Ursell" and will be donated by Barry Ursell's family. Barry Ursell started playing badminton when he was 13 and is now the record holder for most National Badminton Championships. All of Barry's national championships were won in his senior years at the National Seniors & Masters Championships, and because of this he is an example of resilience and pure love of the sport. Barry passed away approximately 3 years ago leaving behind a great badminton legacy.
We look forward to seeing you out there!

Badminton Canada to Pilot U15 Age Category
September 29, 2014
The Alberta Junior Elite and Atlantic Junior Elite will be the test sites this year
Badminton Canada has decided to pilot a U15 age category at two Junior Elite Series Events this year. The events will be the 2014 Alberta Junior Elite Series Event – November 7th to 9th and the 2014 Atlantic Junior Elite Series Event – December 12th to 14th. After the pilot is complete we will be doing a detailed analysis to determine if this age category should be included in future Junior Elite events. The evaluation will take place in January 2015 and recommendations will be implemented as early as September 2015.
In terms of age eligibility players will be eligible for these two events if there birthday is on or after January 1st, 2000.
Players in the U15 event will receive the same level of service at these two events as the U17 and U19 age categories. Their registration fees will also be the same as the U17/U19 players.

Grade 7/8 School Team Competition a Huge Success!
April 28, 2014
6 Teams Competed in the new tournament which will DEFINITELY be held again next year!
See what happened here!
Schools Face-Off for First Time in Team Format
Shamrock School Emerges as the Victor
4 Winnipeg Schools and 2 Rural Manitoba Schools faced off against each other in the very first time in "Team Format" at Badminton Manitoba's Grade 7/8 School Team Badminton Championships. Shamrock emerged as the overall winner by narrowly beating Henry G Izatt in the finals, 3 games to 2. Rural school Blumenort took home Bronze by defeating Leila North 5-0.
The team competition has long been a large part of the badminton scene, where individual strengths are equalled in importance by team depth. The team competition in badminton is played on the international circuit (Thomas & Sudirman Cup; Mens & Womens Cup respectively), in the Asian and Pan Am Championships, Canada Winter Games, Western Canada Summer Games, and now, for Grade 7/8's in Manitoba. By creating a genuine "Team" badminton competition for the grade 7/8's in Manitoba, we had a few goals in mind:
The first goal was to simply introduce badminton as a "team" sport into the school system because it is a foreign concept that will broaden the horizon of our Province.
The second goal was to create an event that would guarantee playing time for all players, and be exciting for all members of the team including the players, coaches and fans.
Each school match-up consists of 1 game each of boys singles, girls singles, boys doubles, girls doubles and mixedx doubles. The winner of each match-up is determined by the winner of the best of 5. We wanted an event that created equal importance between boys and girls events, and singles and doubles events.
Naturally the team competition is more exciting than the individual competition. All of the current team competitions are restricted to the top 2 or 5 players in the province for their age category. We wanted an event that would give a high number of athletes the opportunity to play in this style format.
We wanted an event that encouraged positive school spirit and overall sportsmanship, therefore the only placques that went home to schools were the "Team Spirit Award" and "Sportsmanship Award".
In the end we had an extremely successful tournament. We had 4 teams from Winnipeg, which were Andrew Mynarski, Leila North, Henry G Izatt and Shamrock. We had 2 Rural Manitoba teams including Blumenort and God's Lake Narrows.
The final placements and awards were as such:
Gold – Shamrock
Silver – Henry G Izatt
Bronze – Blumenort
4th – Leila North
5th – God's Lake Narrows
6th – Andrew Mynarski
Sportsmanship Award – God's Lake Narrows
Spirit Award – Henry G Izatt
Next year we hope to at least double the size of the tournament. All teams expressed interest in participating again next year!

Tournament Description
The last tournament left on the adult schedule for this year is also one of the funnest tournaments you could attend. There is a healthy mix of playing for fun and playing to win, which is the true essence of a great tournament.
This year it will be held at Stonewall Collegiate on Fri/Sat May 9/10. The tournament will be a bare-bones tournament so that we can keep the cost low and the # of games high. That means less prizes, no souvenir and no complimentary meal – however the cost is only $30.00 and it will be organized in a way to increase the # of matches for everybody. Prizes will be awarded for the winner(s) of each event only.
There will be 3 separate age categories – 30+, 45+ & 60+ which will hopefully separate people into appropriate levels of capability, however strong players are welcome to enter into lower age categories if they feel like the challenge. Players however cannot move up an age category (think opposite of juniors!)
One last thing – starting with this year's results the winners will have their names engraved on a new trophy dedicated to the Manitoba Seniors & Masters. Barry passed away approximately 2 years ago leaving behind a great badminton legacy.
We look forward to seeing you out there!
You may sign up for 3 events total. The entry fee is $30.00, regardless of how many events you enter.

Due to Construction in the gym at 17 Wing, The 2014 Manitoba B & C Championships will be hosted at College Louis Riel. This tournament is both fun and competitive for all skill levels (…..excluding "A" – but they can have fun watching)

The Manitoba Junior Open was re-named the "Pal Chawla" following the retirement of the Winnipeg Winter Club Badminton Professional, Pal Chawla, after 44 years of service. Pal started off his playing career as a teenager in Indian, where he picked up the sport casually one summer and realized he had some potential. Pal eventually went on to play for Team India winning several international competitions and was making his way up in the World Ranking. One extremely hot day however ended his international competing career when he came down with a severe case of heat stroke. Unable to pick up where he left off, he took up coaching and moved to Manitoba where he would find a few jobs before settling at the Winnipeg Winter Club.
Pal and his family have been critical to the development of badminton in Manitoba for over 40 years and he can still be seen around the Winter Club, chatting with members, doing his workouts and watching some badminton.

The Westman Open is a nylon shuttle tournament that typically is played at Brandon University. This year however, due to schedule conflicts, the tournament will be held at Crocus Plains High School.
In following years, the Brandon Badminton Club will be looking to schedule the popular Westman Open in November at Brandon University. Doing this will distribute the "Open" Manitoba tournaments more evently throughout the season, rather than be heavily congested in the Jan-April timeframe.
This tournament attracts many B/C/D players and is known for it's wonderful social atmosphere.
The Westman Open tournament is not sanctioned by MBA, therefore does not contribute towards provincial ranking points and does not require referees or umpires. The registration, seeding and draw making will be done by Brandon Badminton Club.

The perfect course for phys-ed teachers, this course goes over the official rules and regulations governing the sport of badminton. The Badminton World Federation's rules and regulations are followed at every level of competition, and therefore it is important to improve your knowledge of the game with Manitoba's very own National Umpire and Provincial Coach, Justin Friesen.
Part of the day's training includes learning how to umpire a badminton match. Participants will walk away from the day with the opportunity to continue developing as an official MBA umpire if they wish, however participants are not required to continue with their umpire development.
Date Change – Manitoba B&C
February 13, 2014
The Manitoba B&C Championship date has been changed!
The Manitoba B&C Championship date has been moved to the following weekend, April 4 & 5, 2014.
David Snider Wins 3rd National Mens Singles Title!
February 11, 2014
David Snider wins his 3rd National Mens Singles Championships after a two year hiatus from the sport. 7 Manitobans took part in the National Championships which were held at the Vancouver Lawn Tennis & Badminton Club on Feb. 4-9, 2014.
Vancouver, BC, February 8, 2014 – David Snider, a 4-time Manitoba Singles Champion has unexpectedly won his 3rd National Men's Singles Title at the age of 25 by defeating Ottawa's Stephane Wojcikiewicz, 13-21, 21-6 & 21-8 in the final at the National Championships, held at Vancouver Lawn Tennis & Badminton Club (VLTBC).

Above: Snider pleases the crowd with a victory back flip, the same way he finished his first national title at the age of 19
David Snider, 2008 Pan Am Championships Men's Singles Champion, took a break from badminton 2 years ago in order to focus on getting into med school. Now that he's taken all the necessary courses and tests and he's simply playing the waiting game to try and get into Med School at University of Manitoba in the fall of 2014, why not pick up badminton again? Well that's exactly what he's done and he couldn't have done it with more class or grit!
Snider is well known around Canada and the world for his gritty fitness based-playing style, and when you combine it with the right shots, angles and tempo, he's a deep force to be reckoned with. He's got a heart for hard work and determination – while he is doing due diligence to get into med school, Snider picked up long-distance running because it could challenge him physically while working within his schedule and budget. In his first marathon attempt. Snider placed 4th in the 2012 Manitoba Marathon, running 2:35:35 – faster than all but 2 relay teams! He is still training for marathons and half-marathons, however he's included badminton into his training for the last couple months in order to prepare for the National Championships.
This year's Road to Success:
In Snider's first tournament back after 2 years away from the sport, he placed 2nd in the Yonex Prairie Senior Elite held at the Winnipeg Winter Club, a national level tournament held by Badminton Manitoba. Next up he attended the Yonex Toronto Open and was knocked out in the quarter-finals by the eventual Men's Singles Runner-Up, and as they say, you learn more from losses than you do from wins. One can assume this was the case with the Toronto Open because David Snider, and the rest of Canada's players' next tournament was the National Championships.
Snider Had a tough 1st round match against Ontario's Him (Andy) Lam, but he eventually won in 3 games, 17-21, 21-8, 21-11. This type of a match would be foreshadowing of things to come. The typical fast-paced offense minded Snider was taking a more relaxed long-term approach to the games.
Snider played fellow Manitoba athlete and Badminton Manitoba's Executive Director Ryan Giesbrecht in the Round of 16. Risking a potential loss of funding and a severe written scolding from MBA's Executive Director, Snider still went ahead took the match 21-15, 21-9 – sources say that no punishments were handed out, only high fives.
After splitting the first 2 games in the Quarters against Ontario's Joseph Rogers, Snider was up 20-18 in the third but quickly saw the score even up at 20-all. Joseph Rogers then missing the sideline by a hair on a big smash, and then putting the bird out the side on the next long rally gave Snider the Semi-Finals birth he was hoping for.
The Semi's was a re-match of the 2010 semi-finals when Snider lost to Alex Pang of Alberta in 3 games. Snider's game seemed to evolve from the first couple rounds and the level of badminton had been raised to awe-inspiring level. The length of rallies extended from 10-40 shots at a time. Although the scores don't reflect a tight game, Snider edged out Pang 21-16 21-10 to move on to the finals!
With a large crowd watching the finals, Stephane Wojcikiewicz neutralized Snider's offense and came away with the first game win, 21-13. However this came with a bit of a cost as Stephane was looking a little bit slower, something that Snider wasn't feeling in the least. Once again rallies were 10-40 shots long and the swing of momentum changed several times within a rally – each rally however typically ending with Snider winning with a dazzling drop shot or smash winner. He had his game elevating as the match went on and there was nothing Stephane could seemingly do to stop him. Snider would go on to take the next two games and the Championship with a final score of 13-21, 21-6, 21-8.
Where will Snider go from here? Will we see him on the courts next year? Or will he be enthralled in med school? Either way, the 2014 Singles Champion has once again done Manitoba proud and made a big mark on the national badminton scene.

Above: Medalists Stephane (ONT – Silver), Snider (MB – Gold) & Pang (AB – Bronze)

Tournament Description
Come on out and have some fun at the Yonex Eastman Open Badminton Tournament! Players of all skill levels and experience, from beginner to advanced are encouraged to participate!
The Eastman Open started two years ago in Whitemouth with 45 participants, grew in it's second year to 80 participants in Steinbach Regional Secondary School, and we are expecting over 100 participants this year which is why the tournament will be held at SRSS for the Open and U19 age categories, and at SRHS for the U16 and U14 age categories.
This tournament guarantees 3 matches for each event, in either a round robin (7 players or less) or Triple Knock-Down (8 or more players) format. In the Triple Knock-Down, players will all start in Group A. A first round loss in A puts a player into the C draw, and a first round loss in C goes to D. A second round loss in A goes to B.
