Elliott Beals Reflects on Para Badminton
December 11, 2019
Elliott Beals (head coach at WWC) reflects on travelling to Japan with Olivia Meyer for the Paralympic Badminton Test Event.

Elliott Beals Olivia Meyer
Elliott Beals is the Head Coach at the Winnipeg Winter Club and coaches Olivia Meyer who is one of Canada’s top Para Badminton players. Olivia has a chance at making the Canadian team at the 2020 Paralympics. This is his experience with travel overseas and at a Para Badminton event:
"My experience in Tokyo is something that I will never forget for a long time. For the first time being outside of North America. I was unsure how a 13 hour plane ride would be and the effects of jet lag.
I managed to get some sleep on the plane, but leaving on the afternoon of one day and arriving in the evening of the next day, was hard to get use knowing that I missed a day.
The Japan Badminton organizing committee was fantastic hosting the Paralympic badminton test event, as they made us feel welcome from the time that we arrived. Everything laid for us, including transportation, meals, accommodation, and practice times. The venue setup was amazing with 10 courts which included 2 practice courts. All seating was above the courts which can hold up to 13,000 people.
This was truly an eye opener for me, as it was my first para competition to be involved in. Seeing the best para athletes in the world and the level that they compete at is definitely worth seeing. Most of these countries have been involved with para for a long time. Which makes it obvious as how well they do on the world stage. Since Canada is new to the Para Badminton with in the last couple of years. We are doing well but, we still have a lot of work ahead of us developing athletes. Since 2020 will be the first year for Badminton in the Paralympics. Now is a good time to start para badminton programs in our provincial sport organisations.
This all started with Olivia being chosen for the Petro Canada FACE program. Which is for non carded athletes that are Olympic hopefuls. This grant allows Olivia to use the money for training, and travel. To help her increase her chances of making the 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo.
I have had the privileged of working with Olivia for over a year now. She a dedicated athlete while attending to her studies at the University of Manitoba. She spends 4- 6 days a week at the Winnipeg Winter Club with Myself and athletic trainer Jeff Mitchell.
She will travel to several countries throughout the year competing in Para competitions. Even as a Para athlete, back home she competes and trains with all able body athletes
Olivia is excellent to work with. She has a great work ethic, and I’m excited to have a front row seat in her Badminton career."
Olivia will be competing at the 2020 Yonex Nationals and Paranationals in January here in Winnipeg. You can keep up with Olivia’s journey at the Paranationals HERE. Or you can come out and see her in action along with her coach Elliott Beals January 28 – February 1st at Prairie Badminton (Unit 2, 275 De Baets St.).

Dear Friend Russell Unilowsky Passes Away
December 10, 2019
We fondly remember Russell Unilowsky, a dear friend of the local badminton community.
Funeral Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Saturday December 14th at 9:30 am at Sts. Vladimir and Olga Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral, 115 McGregor St., Winnipeg. MB.

Russell Unilowsky, owner of Canadian Tire Garden City, was an avid badminton player and ambassador for the sport, sponsoring many tournaments through the 2000’s and 2010’s. He passed away suddenly in a car accident on Nov 7, 2019.
He was known as a passionate player on the court and a gentle and soft spoken giant off the court, and was a dear friend to many in the community. When he wasn’t managing his store he also spent lots of time on the track, on the baseball diamond, with his band (Russell Lee Band), and with his family. His wife Oksana gave birth to their son Christian Russell Unilowsky 10 days after his passing. He also leaves behind 4 other children (plus spouses) and 11 great grandchildren.

Remembering Jack Kaplan
August 13, 2019
It is with sadness and many fond memories that we announce the passing of long-time ambassador, coach, official, and friend, Jack Kaplan

In Honor of Long-Time Member, Coach, Official, and Dear Friend, please feel free to consider donating to the Friends of Badminton Manitoba Endowment Fund

JACK KAPLAN
April 15, 1929 – July 24, 2019
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jack Kaplan at the age of 90 at Riverview Health Centre on Wednesday, July 24, 2019.
He will be missed by his wife Leah, sons, Leonard and Alan (Janice) and daughter Susan (Neil), grandchildren, Blair and Shayne, Alana, Matthew and Yaffa, Shaun, Paige and Ayla. Jack is predeceased by his parents, Ralph and Sonia and siblings, Sam, Arthur, Julius, Lilly and Esther.
Jack grew up in Winnipeg’s north end in a large and loving family. Jack was the youngest and often helped his parents in their grocery store. Jack attended St. Johns High School where he played football and other sports and performed in the operettas. Though too young to serve in the Second World War, he joined the air cadets as a youth and later was a member of the Canadian military reserve as an officer.
After high school he earned his Education degree at Bemidji Teacher’s College then heading to Minnesota State University in Minneapolis to complete a Masters in Physical Education degree.
Jack was the first teacher in Manitoba to attain a Masters in Physical Education. He dedicated his life to fitness and health education, teaching hundreds of students throughout his career at David Thompson, Elmwood and Glenlawn. He was then hired by Red River College where he developed the physical education program and taught there for 22 years until his retirement. He coached many sports over the years and was a builder of the Manitoba Badminton Association, coaching and training athletes and umpires. He was an International Badminton Umpire and umpired competitions in Canada and locally well into his 80s. Jack was instrumental in growing Trampolining as a sport, coaching and taking teams to competitions in the US and Canada. He volunteered at both Pan Am games.
Jack loved jogging, reading, painting, gardening, golf, making bread, yogurt and wine and doing Sudoku puzzles. After retiring he became a regular participant at Shabbat services at the Etz Chayim Synagogue. Jack loved photography and was an active member of the Manitoba Camera Club. He loved taking pictures of family, sports, nature as well as documenting the many trips that he and Leah took over the years. He spent hours in his darkroom developing his own pictures and often entered them in contests.
Jack met the love of his life, Leah Fisher on a blind date and after a short time dating, they were married on July 7, 1954. It was the wedding of the year we have been told! Their family grew with the birth of Leonard, Susan and Alan. Jack was a wonderful hands-on Dad taking his kids to many activities such as family swim at the YMHA and to the library every week. He would take them to Red River College to play in the gym, on the trampoline and try archery. As a teacher, Jack had his summers off allowing the family to travel in their station wagon, camping across North America. Leah and Jack loved travelling and took many trips to the USA, Portugal, Spain, Israel, Italy and China. They especially loved cruising the Caribbean. They were wonderful partners in life and great role models for their children and grandchildren. Jack and Leah celebrated 65 years of love on July 7, 2019.
Jack was a fun Zaida who loved spending time with his grandchildren. He loved all his family and friends unconditionally and will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.
The family would like to thank Dr. Sheldon Permack and staff for their care and support, as well as the doctors, nurses and staff of E3 at Riverview Health Centre who provided such compassionate care over the seven weeks he was there.
The funeral was held on July 26 at Hebrew Sick Benefit Cemetery.
If desired, donations in Jack’s name can be made to Riverview Health Centre, Etz Chayim Synagogue or a charity of your choice.

Manitoba’s Chen Wins Bronze at 2019 Junior Pan Am Badminton Championships!
August 9, 2019
Athletes Kiren Deraj, Anson Chen, and Coach Elliott Beals, all who hail from the Winnipeg Winter Club, made Manitoba and Canada proud at the 2019 Junior Pan Am Badminton Championships which ran from July 12th to 20th in Moncton, New Brunswick.

Most notably Anson Chen (U11 Boys Singles) is bringing home a bronze medal, while Kiren Deraj (U19 Boys Singles) won his first match before bowing out, and Elliott Beals was learning lots along national team coaches at his first Jr Pan Ams!
The event brought together athletes from North and South America, including players from Canada, the US, Brazil, Peru, Mexico, Guatemala and more. Canada performed well at the games, winning gold in 4 out of 5 events in the U19 and U17 categories, sweeping the U11 categories and winning a gold in the U13 and U15 categories. Canada also beat USA 3-0 in the final of the team event to clinch a second consecutive gold medal. We caught up with Manitoba’s best to hear about their experience at the 2019 Jr Pan Ams.
Anson Chen, age 9, received a bronze medal competing in the U11 Boys Singles category. He beat Sebastian Callo (Peru), 22-20, 11-4 (retired) and then lost to the eventual silver medallist John Fu (Canada) 21-14, 21-9. Anson got into the sport two years ago and started at the Winnipeg Winter Club, where he began playing with his family. It was his goal this year to make it to the Games, where he wanted to try his best and hopefully receive a medal. His training consisted of 4-5 hours of on court sessions with coaches Elliott Beals and Thien Vo. With the help of his parents, brother and coaches, he was able to make it to the semi-finals. Although Anson said it felt amazing to win a bronze, his goal “…going forward is to make it to the national team again and win the gold”. His favourite experience was meeting new players and making friends.
Kiren Deraj, age 17, made the round of 16 in the U19 Boys Singles Category. He beat out Bryan Rodrigo Roque Caycho (Peru) in two sets of21-19 21-18, but was sadly defeated by Rafael Faria (Brazil), 21-16 21-13. Deraj, who still has another year to compete in the U19 category, began playing squash at the Winnipeg Winter Club in 2011 and eventually switched over to badminton in 2014 and has been focusing on badminton ever since. Making the Jr Pan Ams was his goal for the last two years, meaning that his success this year made it all the more special. Leading up to the games, Kiren followed a rigorous training plan: 2 hours of on court per day, working out and running twice a week, with only one rest day per week. He trained under Thien and Eilliott and played with numerous other athletes, even waking up at 6 am to beat the morning rush, proving his dedication to the sport. Going into the Games, he felt a mix of nervousness and excitement, as he and Anson were the only two Manitobans to represent Canada as athletes. Citing provincial pride Kiren said, “I would wear the team Manitoba Sweater… most of the time [he was there]”. Kiren was unsatisfied with his performance, however it has only made him want to work even harder to accomplish his goals, including medalling at the 2020 Jr Pan Am Badminton Championships and making the world junior team for next year. He would like to thank his parents, his siblings, his coaches and everyone else who helped him on his journey to the games.
Elliott Beals, a native of Nova Scotia, moved to Manitoba a year ago to take over the position of head coach at the Winnipeg Winter Club. A year later, and he was selected to coach the Canadian team at the Jr Pan Am Championships. He has been coaching for around 20 years, and like Anson and Kiren, this was his first time attending the Jr Pan Ams. Elliott was very proud of having two of his athletes from the Winnipeg Winter Club representing Canada, being his first year as the head coach. He was especially glad he was selected to be a coach for Team Canada, so that he could support his players. His focus for his athletes leading up to the games was to “… try to represent themselves as best as possible, play as well as they can no matter what the outcome was – when they left the court they knew, I put my best effort forward.” Elliott thought his athletes handled the pressure well, considering that it was both of their first times there. His goal going forward as a coach is to have another athlete win a national championship (following in the footsteps of Thien) to have more Manitobans represent Canada at the Jr Pan Ams, and finally to have one of his athletes represent Canada at the World Championships. Although Beals has ambitious goals, he understands that it will take time to achieve them and that it will require patience and planning. One of his stand out experiences was “being able to sit with the national team coach and coach with him”. Elliott looks forward to coaching Team Canada again in the future.

Badminton in Winnipeg has seen a decline in the number of its badminton clubs over the years that included the Winnipeg Canoe Club’s board resigning in 1993 and the facility being demolished in 2006 and the demolition of the Wildwood Club in 2014.
This situation is about to change with Prairie Badminton opening a new dedicated badminton facility on June 1, 2019.
Prairie Badminton is a private company that is owned and fully funded through the efforts of Ryan Giesbrecht and Justin Friesen who are both dedicated individuals currently employed by Badminton Manitoba as Executive Director and Provincial Coach respectively.
While Badminton Manitoba has provided no funding towards the establishment of Prairie Badminton, it will be running this year’s summer camps at this new facility due essentially to the fact that it is not considered a viable option to coordinate separate camps this year at the Winnipeg Winter Club as they are running their own summer camps.
Effective September 2019, Badminton Manitoba will be resorting to a sealed bid process for the delivery of its future programs and tournaments.
Badminton Manitoba commends Ryan and Justin’s efforts in establishing this new facility which helps elevate the sport and puts Winnipeg on the map along with other major Canadian cities with a dedicated badminton only facility.
The board will be working closely with both Ryan and Justin who will continue their positions with Badminton Manitoba to ensure a smooth transition and for their replacements in due course.
The badminton community is invited to send any questions, comments or suggestions on any matters related to it’s activities and badminton to the board at it’s dedicated email at: bod@badminton.mb.ca

MBA Response to Budget Questions
April 13, 2019
Please see in this news article a formal response to some of the questions/concerns in regards to tournaments and MBA annual budget.
Thanks!
It has been recently brought to the attention of the Manitoba Badminton Association (MBA) that some individuals have some questions and potential concerns about the tournament budgets of MBA sanctioned tournaments. Some other questions/concerns were raised in regards to the annual MBA budget as well. Our goal with this open letter is to provide an opportunity to present the facts in regards to these issues, encourage members to continue to be inquisitive and interested in a direct communication to the MBA staff and/or board, and finally to provide a means by which we will be moving forward to address some of these questions/concerns.
First of all we must take the time to acknowledge that while most of this conversation occurred on Facebook, it wasn’t until one particular member wrote an email to the MBA office staff that we became aware of any of the issues. We would like to encourage members to take this course of action in the future so that we gather the feedback we need to improve our services/product. Posting on social media is not a direct link to MBA and therefore we respond appropriately if we are not aware of such issues.
Tournament Budgets
Most tournaments are run with a budget that is solely controlled by the host, including all Premier Series Tournaments (Provincials, Herb Richard, Junior Provincials, and Pal Chawla), B&C Championships, Seniors & Masters, Westman Open, City Junior Open, any any Club-Controlled Affiliated Tournament (WWC Round Robin, etc.). This means that for these tournaments MBA accepts all the registrations, then gives all the registration fees to the host except for whatever expenses we occur for online transaction fees, GST (new in 2018-19), and officials. We also donate the shuttles required for the tournament and typically some prizes or giveaways as well. We also pay for the travel and accommodations for the officials attending the tournaments so that the host only needs to budget for their time on court; using Westman as an example, which is not the most expensive for us means that we pay about $500 to send 1 or 2 officials, and the host pays about $300-600 in officials fees which ultimately is only an $11/hr honorarium for the officials which is less than minimum wage (hence it’s an honorarium). Essentially it’s a net zero for MBA because the prizes/shuttles we receive through sponsorship with Yonex Canada. For Norman Open we are spending much more on travel/accommodations. Attached is a rudimentary budget for this type of tournament.
There are only 3 tournaments which we as MBA purchase the prizes and everything as if we were a host, and we’re trying to change that by training up hosts to run the show themselves; and these tournaments are Southman, Eastman, and Norman Open. We offer these tournaments at a lower rate than any other sanctioned tournaments in the province, and the price has actually gone down over the years, most notably if you enter in 1 event it’s only $35. We have a lot of expenses associated with these tournaments that I imagine are unnoticeable to the naked eye, and they are constantly a work in progress of trying to acquire, train, and retain volunteers who are willing to work these tournaments. Our goal is for these tournaments to turn into Club-Hosted Tournaments rather than MBA-Hosted Tournaments. Attached is an example budget for these tournaments.
Tournament Budget Priorities/Prizes
Some have raised issues over feeling that prizes are not adequate for what they are paying, or that prizes are decreasing in quality over the years. Some of this is personal opinion and some of this is true, but with reason. Let us explain below.
The tournament prize situation is a difficult one to figure out, but as with all the tournament priorities can be re-aligned to what the members generally value. A little bit of history and knowledge of current practices always helps to put things into context.
From the years between 2010 and 2014 it was apparent that prizes, regardless of how much was spent or what they were, never quite fit the satisfaction of the members involved, and so we put out a survey to the membership that came back with the results that people valued the following items in terms of priority for tournaments: 1) Meaningful Competition (close matches), 2) Relationships/Friends/Community, 3) Low Entry Fee, 4) Prizes/Souvenirs.
With this information we decided to communicate this to our tournament hosts as well as use this information for the few tournaments that we had some control over; focusing on keeping registration fees low by minimizing prizes which were the lowest ranked priority of tournaments and letting the athletes focus the tournaments on what matters most to them, the competition. Some have mentioned that prices have stayed the same over the years; which is a success in our eyes because the cost of facilities, prizes, shuttles, officials, and GST has steadily gone up over the last 7 years, and we have provided new services such as Live Score, professional photography, and advertising banners that increase the professionalism and public appeal of our events.
Over the years we had some complaints that juniors received medals but adults didn’t, so we decided to try 1 year to give medals to the adults to see what the reception would be, and up until now the only feedback we’ve received is positive, which obviously is a skewed result as apparently many people are very displease with that change. We are not averse to changing this back, and that will likely be a necessary change for 2019-20.
Tournament Bidding/Hosting
We recently went to a bid process for hosting tournaments, with the agreement that the hosts need to follow through on some base level requirements; for example this is how Brandon Badminton Club was awarded the 2019 Championships because their bid was the strongest by a long shot. The hosting requirements still leave a bit of freedom in the way hosts can approach the tournaments, but that will be under review now certainly in regards to potentially providing more consistency between tournaments. That being said, we do want hosts to be able to provide a number of different levels of tournaments with different price points to entice different players along the way; so that’s something we’ll consider in the review process for 2019-20.
In terms of the competitiveness of hosting tournaments, we are often left with only 1 club who has bid on an event, and sometimes none. There is a lack of clubs willing and/or able to host tournaments and therefore the lack of competitiveness can reduce the urgency in hosting a really great event. With an increased potential of hosts we could hold them more accountable, and/or the members would simply choose to play the tournaments which they would like to support.
MBA Annual Budget
As this seemed to be sort of an outlier topic, we would like to simply encourage members who have a concern with our annual budget and financial decision to attend our Annual General Meeting (AGM) which is held in September annually. We offer an in depth look at our finances and programming at this meeting and can offer an answer to any questions or concerns in this setting.
We are confident that our financial practices are working for the betterment of the sport and it’s members, and that any questions can be resolved with a quick explanation. Sometimes audited financials can be difficult to interpret accurately without an understanding of the history and/or operations behind it.
If you would not like to wait for an AGM then please take the time to contact MBA Executive Director Ryan Giesbrecht at ryan@badminton.mb.ca or one of the board members listed on the MBA Website.
Action Plan
MBA would like to take this opportunity to say that we have heard the members concerns and we’ll be addressing them in the off-season.
We will start by putting out a survey that we are URGING members to participate in. If you do not take the opportunity to make your voice heard in this way then your voice simply won’t hold the weight that it should. We will be looking once again at player priorities at the forefront of hosting tournaments
We will take the survey results to the board as well as our typical tournaments hosts to discuss and make a plan for the future.
If you have anything to add to our review process, please don’t hesitate to contact the MBA staff or Board of Directors.
Thank you!
