Participants must have an active current 2023-2024 season Base, Provincial, or National membership.
The competition will be conducted under the official rules of Badminton Canada.

1 event: $65.00
2 & 3 events: $75.00
Entry fees are payable on-line at the time of registration.
SHUTTLES
Yonex feather shuttles will be used. Match shuttles are included in the entry fee.
CLOTHING & EQUIPMENT
Participants must have an indoor change of clothing and non-marking athletic shoes.
Participants must bring their own racquets.
OUT OF TOWN ENTRIES
Participants registering from out of town. Please make a note during your registration
AVAILABILITY
Players must make themselves available for the entirety of the event. Due to the unpredictability of speed of play, athletes are expected to be ready well ahead of their scheduled match time.
The tournament will enforce a 10-minute disqualification rule and a 2-minute warm-up rule.
Reasonable requests for late starts or timing accommodations are not guaranteed to be accepted and will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
COACHING
For field-of-play access, coaches must hold a valid (confirmed or pending) 2023-2024 MBA Coaching License.
Only one coach will be allowed to be present behind the court during any match.
PANDEMIC PROTOCOLS
All athlete-participants, coaches, and officials may participate in or attend this event.
The tournament will be run according to the MBA’s most recent Return-to-Play Guidelines.
Any individuals displaying symptoms or having been exposed to COVID symptoms prior to or during the event will be expected to withdraw (please note the new MBA COVID-19 Program Refund Policy). The tournament referee or tournament host reserves the right to remove a participant from the draw and ask them to leave if they if they are exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms. The tournament referee or host reserves the right to ask an individual to leave if they are exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms.
MBA or the tournament host reserve the right to limit spectator capacity.
The tournament referee or tournament host reserves the right to remove athletes or individuals for non-compliance. Failure to comply with tournament protocols could affect a member’s standing.
REFUND POLICY
Badminton Manitoba does not permit refunds of MBA Memberships.
Badminton Manitoba does not permit refunds of tournament registration fees unless requests are accompanied by a medical note or immediate family crisis. This does not apply to partial fee refunds if an athlete paid for 2-3 categories and was unable to secure a partner (thus only competing in 1 event).
MBA COVID-19 Program Refund Policy : If a participant-athlete develops symptoms of COVID-19 or is exposed to COVID-19 before or during the event, a 100% or partial refund (if the exposure takes place between events) will be granted. No medical note will be required.

The Manitoba Badminton Association is hosting an NCCP Comp Dev Coaching Certification Course on January 25 & 26th. This will take place at Prairie Badminton (275 De Baets St, Unit 2). The course is 18 hours (including on court time) and the fee is $300+GST = $315.00.

The MBA is pleased to announce the hiring of Elliott Beals as our new Provincial Coach
Elliott is already a big part of the local badminton community and was helping as a casual employee for the MBA over the spring and summer.
We are lucky to have him come on in more formal capacity to work with the office and Sport Manitoba to revamp our high performance (Team Manitoba) program.
In addition Elliott will be promoting coaching development throughout the province.

At our AGM this fall elections were held for board of director positions.

Newly Elected/appointed board members: Ian Abbott, Jonathan Hsiung, Ruwinize Mercado & Veronica
The MBA is very fortunate to have retained Renee in the role of interim President, her dedication and efforts are to be commended.
Ian has stepped into the role of Secretary for the board.
The VP and Treauser roles will be filled in the coming weeks.
The MBA is working with Volunteer Manitoba to recruit skill specific volunteers to help in these areas.
The MBA would also like to thank all outgoing board members (at the AGM and earlier in the year).
The board as a whole was tasked with a workload well above any normal year and each person deserves gratitude for stepping up to the plate to help.
If you are interested in helping the MBA there will be some upcoming recuitment for various committees and working groups.

Day 1 in PEI – The team had their team photo taken in front of the Athlete’s Village Welcome sign. The athletes did some pin trading. They had a practice session at the venue at 4:00 PM. Coach Brad Stevenson won True Sport Trivia in the coaches lounge. The Competition starts tomorrow at 9:15 (7:15 AM Manitoba time) with the start of the Mixed Doubles individual event.
Week 1 of the Canada Winter Games has already begun. Team Manitoba’s Badminton team will be heading to PEI for Week 2 competition on Sunday, February 26. This past Saturday some of the athletes, coaches, family, and friends had a Send Off Dinner at the Clay Oven where Team Manitoba members and coaches received their games clothing. Competion for our Team Manitoba athletes begins on Tuesday, February 28 with the Individual Events.

Good Day Manitoba Badminton Community,
My name is Paul Poirier and I am the Vice President of Badminton Manitoba. For those of you who don’t recognize my name, you might know my daughter’s Serenity, a current member of the Canada Winter Games Team, and Paisley, who has played badminton in our province for many years. My vision for badminton in our province involves an inclusive community where all corners of the province can enjoy the love of badminton equally.
Here are a few things going on within our community that I am sure many of you would like to know:
1. the current Executive Director, Melanie Cure, is on leave which is why we have a posting for an Interm Executive Director which closes today
2. two members of the Board of Directors, Marj Niemi and Mariette DeGagne, have resigned from the board, we will be appointing a new board member for the remainder of the term which is till the annual general meeting
3. a new accountant has been hired and has been working dilligently to get us caught up with our financial statements
In Memory of Stefan Carter

The Manitoba Badminton Association mourns the loss of Stefan Carter at the age of 95. Our condolences go out to his family, friends, and loved ones. Stefan was a dedicated badminton player over the last 42 years. He began playing the sport he loved in 1981. In 2018, Stefan was honoured with the Manitoba Badminton Association Sport for Life Award. There will not be a service for Stefan but an obituary will be placed in the Winnipeg Free Press.

Entry fees are payable on-line at the time of registration.
SHUTTLES
Yonex Mavis 350 nylon shuttles will be used. Match shuttles are included in the entry fee.
CLOTHING & EQUIPMENT
Participants must have an indoor change of clothing and non-marking athletic shoes.
Participants must bring their own racquets.
AVAILABILITY
Players must make themselves available for the entirety of the event. Due to the unpredictability of speed of play, athletes are expected to be ready well ahead of their scheduled match time.
The tournament will enforce a 10-minute disqualification rule and a 2-minute warm-up rule.
Reasonable requests for late starts or timing accommodations are not guaranteed to be accepted and will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
COACHING
For field-of-play access when junior athletes are playing, coaches must hold a valid (confirmed or pending) 2022-2023 MBA Coaching License.
Only one coach will be allowed to be present behind the court during any match.
PANDEMIC PROTOCOLS
All athlete-participants, coaches, and officials may participate in or attend this event.
Any individuals displaying symptoms or having been exposed to COVID symptoms prior to or during the event will be expected to withdraw (please note the new MBA COVID-19 Program Refund Policy). The tournament referee or tournament host reserves the right to remove a participant from the draw and ask them to leave if they are exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms. The tournament referee or host reserves the right to ask an individual to leave if they are exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms.
MBA or the tournament host reserves the right to limit spectator capacity.
The tournament referee or tournament host reserves the right to remove athletes or individuals for non-compliance. Failure to comply with tournament protocols could affect a member’s standing.
REFUND POLICY
Badminton Manitoba does not permit refunds of MBA Memberships.
Badminton Manitoba does not permit refunds of tournament registration fees unless requests are accompanied by a medical note or immediate family crisis. This does not apply to partial fee refunds if an athlete paid for 2-3 categories and was unable to secure a partner (thus only competing in 1 event).
MBA COVID-19 Program Refund Policy : If a participant-athlete develops symptoms of COVID-19 or is exposed to COVID-19 before or during the event, a 100% or partial refund (if the exposure takes place between events) will be granted. No medical note will be required.
TERMS & CONDITIONS
In consideration of the acceptance of this entry in the name of the 2023 Southman Open and 2023 South Junior Challenge and 2023 South Para-Badminton Challenge, I, for myself, my heirs, executors, administrators, and assigns, waive any claims to which I may become entitled for injury or damage, and release the MBA, the Brandon Badminton Club, and all other organizers, sponsors, representatives, their agents and employees and any other person or organization assisting in this event from any claims for damages or injury suffered by me as a result of my participation in, or traveling to, or from, this event, notwithstanding that any such loss, injury or damage may have arisen by reason of the negligence of anyone or more of the aforesaid parties, their servants, agents or employees. I further state that I am in proper physical condition to participate in this program and am aware that participation could, in some circumstances, result in physical injury. I also give my permission for the free use of my name and picture in broadcast, telecast, or written account of this program.
2023 Senior & Para National Badminton Championships

This event showcases some of the best badminton talent Canada has to offer, including several Canadian Olympians and Manitoba’s Olivia Meier, the first shuttler on the Canadian Paralympic Team.
