Tournament Updates October 27, 2020

October 28, 2020

More information on tournaments.

Unfortunately due to the rising numbers of COVID-19 cases in the province the Westman Open in Brandon has been cancelled.

Also the Herb Richard MB Open at the WWC has been postponed with the date to be determined.

Hopefully this situation will get better sooner rather than later and we can go ahead with some of our tournaments. In the meantime stay safe and keep watching our website for information as it becomes available.

September 28, 2020 — Tournament Update

September 28, 2020

Please read for updates on upcoming events.

We regret to confirm that the 2020 Provincial Championships and the 2020 Junior Provincial Championships are now cancelled, and the 2020 WWC Junior Open has been postponed.

Over the past several months, we have been monitoring the COVID-19 situation in Manitoba in the hopes that these provincial championships could go ahead. We brainstormed different formats and ideas and tried to find ways to run these events. Unfortunately, the modifications that would need to be made to these tournaments in order for them to be held with minimal risk would render them very exclusionary and unlike past provincial events. Furthermore, as of two weeks ago, the Province was "strongly recommending" that no tournament or events be held, and with cases still on the rise, we felt it best to not move forward with both Provincial Championship tournaments.

No other tournaments have been modified at this time. We hope that tournaments like the Herb Richard, the WWC Junior Open (currently postponed), some of the Rural Super Series, and others can still go ahead. We are also developing new "COVID-adapted" tournament formats and hope to host several throughout the season.

Take care. We look forward to seeing you soon!

August 31, 2020

As August draws to a close, the MBA bids a fond farewell to Ryan.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Ryan from the bottom of our hearts, for 10 years of service to our organization and to our community. Under his leadership, our organization changed and grew considerably, and we look forward to seeing what he does next. While it’s more of a "See you later" than a "Goodbye", as he will be found at Prairie Badminton, his departure certainly leaves a mark. We wish him the best of luck at PB, and many blessings to him, Michelle, and their lovely and growing family.

To reflect on the past ten years, and to hear for the departing Executive Director, please click here to read Ryan’s final letter to MBA members.

August 25, 2020

The MBA Board of Directors is pleased to announce that the Executive Director position has been filled.

Melanie Cure joined the Manitoba Badminton Association family on April 6th, bringing a host of skills related to the job. Mel has been involved in grassroots badminton for two decades, both as a player and a coach. She has been coaching in St-Pierre-Jolys since 2000 and has been running the St-Pierre Badminton Club since 2010. After representing her home region as a junior athlete in the 2002 Manitoba Winter Games, Mel returned as Team Eastman’s Assistant Coach in 2014, then again in 2018 as Team South’s Manager and Assistant Coach. From 2018-2019, she worked as Team Manager for Badminton Manitoba at the Canada Winter Games. Her badminton experience has allowed her to meet competitors and coaches across the province and the country and has given her a broad understanding of the needs facing our community at many levels.

Outside of badminton, Melanie has worked in both the public and private sectors; in recent years she taught at both the University of Manitoba and the University of Winnipeg. She also has a wealth of experience working alongside organizations and small businesses to plan projects, promote events, and tackle a variety of issues.

Mel is excited to take on this new role and further serve the badminton community. For the time being, Mel and Ryan will work together as co-directors (from home), tackling the obstacles and challenges brought on by COVID-19 and preparing for the upcoming badminton season. Once Mel has had an opportunity to grapple the many aspects of the job then she will take over as full-time Executive Director.

Mel can be reached at melanie@badminton.mb.ca

MBA Precautions for COVID-19 at MBA Events

March 12, 2020

Please review the response from the Manitoba Badminton Association Board of Directors regarding the COVID-19 Virus and the upcoming tournament and events in Manitoba.

The Manitoba Badminton Association will continue to monitor the situation with the COVID-19 Virus and how it relates to our upcoming local events. The MBA plans to work closely with the recommendations of our sport partners, Badminton Canada and Sport Manitoba as well as local and National health authorities.

At this time all Provincial level events are still planned to occur and event organizers continue to work hard to run these events. However, the situation is fluid and could change from day to day.

Right now the main recommendations from Health Authorities are to practice safe hygeine auch as consistent hand washing and to avoid touching around the face. The MBA will be requesting that all event organizers provide a suitable amount of hand sanitizer at events at this time.

We are asking that tournament participants take the following precautions:

  1. We encourage all players to minimize their time in the venue as much as possible. For example, leave the gym during breaks in matches and leave the gym when they are done competing for the day.
  2. We ask that all participants at the event use these 6 recommended steps to protect yourself from COVID 19

i. Wash your hands frequently – regular and thorough cleaning of your hands with soap and water for a minimum of 20 seconds.

ii. Maintain social distancing – maintain at least 1 m (3 fee)t distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing and seizing.

iii. Avoid touching your eyes nose and mouth – hands touch many surfaces and could pick up bacteria and viruses once contact needed and can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose or mouth. From there the virus can get into your body and make you sick.

iv. Practice respiratory hygiene – Make sure you, and the people around you, follow good respiratory hygiene. This means covering your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Dispose of the tissue immediately.

v. If you are feeling unwell – please stay home and notify us that you will not be coming in that day

vi. If you have the symptoms of the coronavirus – fever, cough, difficult breathing seek medical attention however call ahead first to your doctor, clinic or hospital informing them of your situation

Badminton Canada’s position on COVID 19

  • Badminton Canada takes the health and wellbeing of its athletes and stakeholders seriously.
  • We share the global concerns related to the spread of the corona virus COVID-19.
  • We have committed as an organization to trust and respect the opinions and directions of the World’s Health Organizations, including the Public Health Agency of Canada, the Canadian Government and the various provincial health authorities with jurisdiction over their own areas.
  • We will continue to follow the advice and recommendations of these health leaders in determining Badminton Canada’s own measured response appropriate to Canada and our organization specifically.
  • Our goal is to minimize the risk to our participants while continuing our operations in as close to a normal environment as possible.
  • At this time, PHAC has assessed the public health risk associated with COVID-19 as low for the general population in Canada. There is an increased risk of more severe outcomes for Canadians contracting the virus who:
    • are aged 65 and over
    • have compromised immune systems
    • have underlying medical conditions
  • Canada’s pandemic goals, which are first, to minimize serious illness and overall deaths, and second to minimize societal disruption among Canadians.
  • This approach will guide Canada’s response to COVID-19. This guidance considers the Canadian context and is based on currently available scientific evidence, expert opinion and public health assumptions.
  • We will continue to follow their lead and respond to their recommendations.

Additional information on precautions for Manitobans can be found here: Manitoba Coronavirus

Alternate Options for Shaking Hands:

As a precationary measure, and to respect people’s comfort levels, Badminton Canada is suggesting players may use any of the following options to replace the normal post-match "handshake" while still offering a sign of respect to opponent(s):

The Junior Awards Banquet is coming up soon in conjunction with the MB Junior Provincial Closed Championships.

Each year we put together a silent auction for the junior players. We are looking for donations towards this auction. Donations can be anything large or small. They can be badminton related or not. Small items can be combined together to create a bigger prize. The more prizes we have available the nicer the silent auction will be.

Auction items can be dropped off at Prairie Badminton reception.

About the Tournament:

Phil Allard began his badminton career many years ago, where he quickly became one of the best players in the Province.

Phil ended his last year as a Junior in 1993 with a Triple Crown win at the Manitoba Junior Open.

He continued to play as a Senior competitor, before moving on to become one of the top National players, pairing up with partners the likes of Olympian Anna Rice.

Phil also contributed off the court chairing the committee for Junior Nationals held in Winnipeg in 1994 and more recently as Treasurer for Badminton Alberta.

In addition to playing badminton Phil was a force to be reckoned with on the tennis and squash courts and anything else he set his mind to try.

Always the competitive type – he was also the most modest, and always had a smile for everyone.

Phil was killed in 2008 along with friends and colleagues, in a plane crash in Alberta.

He will be fondly remembered for his great love of laughter and life.
