Brandon Badminton Club is proud to now offer categories for junior players at their annual Yonex Westman Open! This means that juniors can look forward to playing players from their own age group, much like all the other Rural Super Series tournaments in Manitoba.
The Yonex Westman Open is a favourite tournament for many Manitobans and Saskatchewanians because the Brandon Badminton Club always does a great job with hospitality. Just ask anybody who has gone in the past and they will be able to tell you that the atmosphere and competition are all big reasons why they continue to attend.
This tournament is a 0.5 tier tournament on the Badminton Manitoba Tournament Ranking Chart, which makes it on par with the B&C Championships, and higher in ranking points than all the other Rural Super Series tournaments.

Orlando Athayde to Receive Badminton Canada’s Volunteer of the Year Award
October 4, 2017
Badminton Canada will be awarding their Volunteer of the Year award to Orlando Athayde on Saturday, October 7 at 4:00 pm at the King’s Head Yonex Prairie Senior Elite Tournament.
Badminton Canada will be awarding Orlando Athayde their Volunteer of the Year Award this weekend at the King’s Head Yonex Prairie Senior Elite Tournament. Orlando is receiving this award for the many hours of work he put into organizing and running the 2017 Canadian Masters Badminton Championships held at Red River College this past April. This tournament was one of the largest held here in Winnipeg in the last few years. It ran for a full week and involved more than 160 athletes from all over the world, 13 officials, 30+ volunteers and many spectators. This tournament was particularly difficult to organize because just a few months before the tournament the original venue was lost and a new venue had to be found. Orlando spent many hours making the changes in venue, and still making sure that all the small details were in place so that participants could enjoy their stay in Winnipeg. Orlando was co-chair with Terry Porayko, who both led a larger committee which included Lisa Warkentine (Transportation), Ian Clara (Communications), Thecla Athayde (Hospitality), Marj Niemi (Officials Liaison), and Ryan Giesbrecht (Executive Director). In the end, the tournament ran from April 3 – 8, 2017 and ran very smoothly.
As well as organizing the Canadian Masters Tournament, Orlando is very involved in badminton in Manitoba. He is currently a member on the Board of Directors of Badminton Manitoba and is a volunteer photographer for the organization. You will find him at almost every tournament held in the province either playing or with his camera. Often doing both.

Yonex Prairie Jr Elite & Yonex Quebec Sr Elite
August 11, 2017
Registration is now available for the first two national tournaments of the 2017-18 season
The 2017-18 domestic competition season is fast approaching, and BCAN is excited for the upcoming events that are already beginning to take shape.
First, we have our 2017 Yonex Prairie Junior Elite taking place September 22nd – 24th 2017 at the Riverside Badminton Club in Saskatoon, SK. During the same weekend, the 2017 Yonex Quebec Elite will be taking place at the Universite Laval in Quebec City, Quebec.
Both of these events will be open for registration tonight (August 11th, 2017) at 9pm PST, available at the links below:
2017 Yonex Prairie Junior Elite – http://badmintoncanada.
2017 Yonex Quebec Elite – http://badmintoncanada.
In preparation, we (Badminton Canada) would like to inform you all of some items to be aware of starting the 2017-18 season.
- Age groups – For the 2017-18 season, Badminton Canada has aligned their 2017-18 Competition Calendar Year with the 2018 BWF Calendar Year. Because our season start date (September 1st, 2017) does not match the starting date of the BWF calendar on January 1st, 2018, we must plan accordingly for the events that take place in 2017. To ensure that all athletes are competing in the correct age category throughout the 2017-18 season, the ages are adjusted for 2017 as follows – Competition is open to athletes born 2004 or later (U15), 2002 or later (U17), 2000 or later (U19). This may cause confusion for some athletes whose birthdays fall in September to December. They will have to play in the age category for which they are age eligible for 2018.
- With registration opening for both the 2017 Yonex Prairie Junior and Quebec Elite, please ensure that all athletes and clubs are in good standing with your provincial organization. Athletes will be unable to register if they are not in good standing with their province and if their clubs are not recognized by you the PTSO. BCAN will help coordinate solutions with you and the athlete(s) involved to facilitate this process.
- Coaching registration will have the same registration deadlines as athletes for events. As both these events are closed for registration on Friday September 1st, 2017, we ask that all coaches that wish to be involved with either of these events to be registered for the 2017-18 season by this deadline as well. We will send an update next week on the final regulations and registration process for all coaches for the 2017-18 domestic season. Please ensure your coaches are registering on time or they will not be eligible for the first events of the season.
- As is generally the case for the first events of the season, we anticipate some bumps in the registration process. If an athlete is late in registering, for the first event only we will consider a late registration. That being said, there will be a $50 penalty for late registrations if we do choose to allow any late registrants. Please encourage your athletes to register early so they do not end up missing out on the events.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. If you have any questions/comments/concerns, I will be happy to discuss them with you in further detail.
Regards,
Mike Luck

Justin Friesen Going for Pan Am Umpire Accreditation
June 28, 2017
Manitoba’s Provincial Coach Justin Friesen also happens to be a pretty stand up umpire (or sit down if there are umpire chairs…hahaha). So much so that Badminton Canada has put him up for Pan Am accreditation testing at the Pan Am Junior Championships in Markham Ontario, July 21-28, 2017.
Justin Friesen, who began his umpiring career in 2009 has quickly moved up the ranks. By 2010 he gained his Regional Certification, and his Provincial Certification in 2012. After a few good years of officiating locally he was called on by Badminton Canada in 2014 for his National Umpire Accreditation and passed with flying colours. Since then he has umpired such National/International tournaments as 2014 Junior National Championships, 2014 Prairie Junior Elite, 2015 University/College Championships, 2015 Prairie Senior Elite, 2016 Canada Open, and the 2016 Prairie Junior Elite.

You may be thinking to yourself, I thought Justin Friesen was a Provincial Coach, not an umpire! Turns out having first hand knowledge of high level badminton aids in your development as an umpire. It also turns out that BWF and Pan Am Badminton looks kindly on younger umpire and referee prospects because they have a rule that all of BWF’s umpires need to be under the age of 55. That said, they’re always looking to promote young talented officials up the ranks, including our very own Justin Friesen!
Justin has now been invited to umpire again at the 2017 Canada Open, July 11-16 at WinSport Arena in Canada Olympic Park (Calgary, AB). Markee players at this year’s event will be Kento Momota (Jpn), Michelle Li (Cdn), Kashyap Parupalli (Ind), Choi Solgyu/Chae Yoo Jung (Kor), Stefani & Gabriela Stoeva (Bul), and H.S. Prannoy (Ind).
Canada Open Tournament Software Page
Almost immediately following the Canada Open, Justin will be heading to Markham Ont for his Pan Am Umpire Evaluation at the Pan Am Junior Championships, where he may be able to see some of Manitoba’s Arnish Patel’s matches. Badminton Canada will have nominated Justin for evaluation, and if he passes his tests then he will be called on to umpire at Pan Am events. The only next step would be to move on to become a BWF umpire, which would allow him to umpire at all the big tournaments including World Super Series events, Commonwealth Games, and Olympics.

Arnish Patel Representing Canada at the Pan Am Junior Championships!
June 16, 2017
Under 19 Manitoba Junior Provincial Champion Arnish Patel will be representing Canada at the Pan American Games in Markham, Ontario from July 19-28, 2017. Arnish has been selected for the Under 19 Boys Singles Category and will be competing alongside 6 other canadian athletes.
http://www.jrpanamchampionships2017.ca/
Help Arnish get to Pan Am Juniors by Supporting his GoFundMe Page
Arnish Patel has been playing badminton for 8 years and for the last five years training competetively with Manitoba’s High Performance team and also at the WWC.
He has had the opportunity to train with many knowledgeable coaches throughout the years including Archie, Pal, & Sean Chawla, Anil Kaul, Justin Friesen and Ryan Giesbrecht.

In his career he has competed in many provincial and national level tournaments. Some of his major achievements include Manitoba Junior Open and Closed championships, Silver medallist at the Pairie Junior Elite and Gold medallist at the Alberta Junior Elite in U19 Boys Singles. He has earned bronze in Boys Doubles at the Pairie Junior Elite with doubles partner Ivan Tsang and another bronze at the Alberta Junior Elite with mixed partner Cara De Belle. Furthermore he has participated in open tournaments such as the WWC Open, Manitoba Closed, Herb Richard MB Open and the Senior Nationals. Arnish has represented Manitoba at Western Canadian Team Championships for the last 3 years, helping Manitoba earn 2 Bronze Medals and 1 Silver Medal, and Western Canada Summer Games in 2015 where he contributed to earning another bronze for Team Toba. Recently, he finished Quarter Finalist in all three events at the Canadian Junior U19 Championships.

Based on his performance in the previous national level tournaments, he has been invited to be a part of the Junior National Team and given an opportunity to compete in the upcoming Pan American Games in Markham, Onatrio. The Games are held on July 19-28 and Arnish will be competing in the individual U19 boys singles category from July 23-28. In preparation for the Games he will be attending the national high performance camp being held in Toronto, Ontario. In the camp , Arnish will be training alongside many national and international athelets under the supervision of national coach Mike Butler. This will be his very first international tournament and he excited to represent Canada and be part of the Junior National Team for the 2017-18 season!

Badminton Canada to Host 2018 World Junior Championships!
May 24, 2017
On Monday May 22nd, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) announced that Badminton Canada has been awarded the 2018 World Junior Badminton Championships, to be held at the Pan Am Centre in Markham, Ontario in November of 2018
Below: (From Left) Martha Deacon (Co- Chair of the 2018 Bid Committee), Poul-Erik-Hoyer (president of BWF), Anil Kaul, (President of Badminton Canada)

(Ottawa, ON) – On Monday May 22nd, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) announced that Badminton Canada has been awarded the 2018 World Junior Badminton Championships, to be held at the Pan Am Centre in Markham, Ontario in November of 2018. This marks only the third time that Canada has hosted a World Badminton Championships, having previously hosted the 2004 World Junior Badminton Championships (Richmond, BC) and the 1985 World Championships (Calgary, AB). The World Junior Badminton Championships is the largest of the BWF World Championships, attracting upwards of 40 countries and over 500 athletes and coaches.
“Badminton Canada is extremely excited about this opportunity to host the World Juniors in Canada.” Said Joe Morissette, Executive Director of Badminton Canada. “This event capitalizes on the legacy of the 2015 Pan American Games, and the 2014 Senior Pan American Championships, both hosted at the Pan Am Centre in Markham, Ontario.”
The World Junior Championships are a great opportunity to showcase rising stars among the next generation of world class badminton athletes. With hosting this international tournament, Badminton Canada believes this event is a huge step for our high-performance and long-term development programs.
“Hosting this event well aligns with our targeted, long-term approach to putting athletes on the podium at the Olympics” continued Joe Morissette, “we understand that producing and developing world champions is a process. Hosting events such as the 2018 World Junior Championships is an important step in supporting our next generation of athletes.”
“Winning a bid for any World Championships in any sport takes a significant amount of work and dedication at so many levels” said Martha Deacon, Director of High Performance on the Badminton Ontario Board, and co-presenter of the bid to the BWF with the Badminton Canada President, Anil Kaul; “we bid knowing the enormity of the task but also in understanding the opportunity that it presents to our nation, to our athletes and to showcase the international diversity of our sport to the GTA”.
With Badminton Canada and Badminton Ontario working collaboratively to bring one of the most prestigious events in badminton to Canada, there is only excitement and optimism surrounding the international competition.
“We are absolutely thrilled with this news from the BWF, and want to thank them for their confidence in our ability to host such a prestigious competition. This is a testament to the living legacy for our sport – from the world class facility that is the Markham Pan Am Centre, to our hundreds of volunteers that were trained for the Games and continue to dedicate so much of their time to building our sport” said Ian Moss, President of Badminton Ontario.
“Not only will this competition showcase the future World and Olympic Badminton champions, but it will offer a massive opportunity for our Canadian athletes and coaches to measure themselves against the best in the world” he continued.
Canada will be hosting the 2017 Pan Am Junior Badminton Championships at the Pan Am Centre in Markham from July 21-28th, and will serve as an excellent preparation event for hosting the World Junior Badminton Championships the following year.
Badminton Canada encourages everyone to come out and support our Canadian athletes for the both the 2017 Jr. Pan American Championships as well as the 2018 World Juniors. These events will have world class performances, and will certainly provide an unforgettable experience for all those who attend. We look forward to seeing you at the Markham Pan Am Centre!

MBA Officials at MHSAA Provincials!
May 19, 2017
MHSAA and MBA took a big step in the right direction at this year’s MHSAA Provincial Championships, providing officials for the first time.
Manitoba is going in the right direction when it comes to growing the sport, and it is spreading to the MHSAA Provincials.
For the first time, the MHSAA Board of Directors voted based on their membership response to have MBA Officials at their Provincial Championships. This is a HUGE step in the right direction, and the positives are many:
- Fair, unbiased professionals making decisions
- Officials are knowledgeable in the laws of badminton, and able to settle any disputes in the correct manner
- Athletes will be ensured a fair and transparent competition, and have the ability to appeal to the referee if they believe there are any issues to resolve on court
- The hosting committee no longer has to worry about settling disputes, and can focus on HOSTING
- Athletes will have the opportunity to ask for an umpires or linesmen if they need
- The hosting committee will be able to utilize Tournament Software, eliminating the need for manually running the tournaments with paper
- Tournament results can be uploaded in a matter of seconds
- Increased professionalism by having officials at the competition
- Increased promotion and awareness of officiating in badminton
- Increased opportunity for MBA to meet the phys-ed teachers and coaches in the school system
- and more!
We would like to thank Christine & Jason Curtis, and Nicole Garbutt for hosting a great tournament and for very willingly working with us to make sure the draws were done correctly!

Tournament Description
The Manitoba Junior Open is the first of two junior provincial championships on the year. "Open" refers to the tournament’s policy on allowing players who are not permanent residents of Manitoba to attend. This tournament always attracts players from all over Manitoba, however sometimes players will come from Ontario and/or Saskatchewan to compete as well.
The tournament was named after Pal Chawla in 2011 following his retirement due to his illustrious career as the Head Badminton Pro at Winnipeg Winter Club for 40 years. Since then Pal Chawla has been inducted into the Badminton Canada Hall of Fame and can be seen around the Winter Club mingling with friends.
This will also be only the 2nd tournament ever in Manitoba that will feature the new Livescore technology. When volunteers or umpires are available, match scores will be shown on live on a TV for all parents/patrons to see!
