Tournament Questions RESULTS

November 24, 2015

Yonex Herb Richard MB Open Presented by Kings Head Pub Results & Photos

November 22, 2015

With over 100 athletes in attendance, the Herb Richard was once again a wonderful tournament. Thank you to Archie Chawla and the Winnipeg Winter Club members for doing a great job of hosting once again. See entire article for more info.

Herb Richard a Strong Tradition

Still Bringing Out Large Numbers After 85 Years

Winnipeg Nov 22, 2015 – Manitoba's longest running badminton tournament, the Yonex Herb Richard Manitoba Open Presented by Kings Head Pub, was host to over 100 athletes this weekend at the Winnipeg Winter Club, keeping our strong tradition of competition going for over 85 years.

If the true test of the quality of a tournament is the number of years it is supported by it's fans, then the Manitoba Open is among the elite. There isn't a badminton tournament in Manitoba that has held the same amount of prestige and longevity and this year we once again saw that players have not lost heart.

The tournament itself was named after the late Herb Richard who passed away in 1995. Herb was the badminton professional at the Wildewood Club for many years and was also a professional coach for tennis and golf in Winnipeg. His contributions who recognized today once again by none other than Archie Chawla, a similar type of community leader who was recently inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame as a builder for Badminton, Squash & Tennis. Archie, who moved to Canada in 1972 as a coach at the Wildewood Club has been coaching in Manitoba for 43 years and is currently the head badminton pro at the Winnipeg Winter Club.

Coincidentally Archie's brother, Pal Chawla, was also on hand to watch the finals today. Pal, yet to be nominated for the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame was the badminton professional at Winnipeg Winter Club for 40 years, is retired now but still contributing as a member of the organizing committee for the 2016 Canadian Badminton Championships which will be held at Winnipeg Winter Club on Feb. 3-6, 2016.

Manitoba's top players registered for the "A" event in hopes of gearing themselves up for the National Championships in February. Tragically Thien Vo who took home the triple crown championship, will not be able to participate in the National Championships because he is not a full citizen of Canada yet. It will be up to the rest of the players, including Kyle Grymonpre, Hanna Rebizant and Haley Nakonechny to fill the gaps in an attempt to bring another National Championships medal back to Manitoba.

Rare Doubles Clinic with Olympian Toby Ng

October 13, 2015

Sunday Oct 25 & Monday Oct 26

Register now by contacting Justin Friesen at coach@badminton.mb.ca

The Manitoba Badminton Association will be teaming up with Toby Ng to offer a Doubles Athlete Clinic here in Winnipeg to help Toby fundraise as he pushes to qualify for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Toby recently narrowly missed qualifying for Sport Canada Athlete Assistance funding ($18,000) largely due to improper calculating of the World Ranking points and, never to back down from a challenge, he has now started a fundraising campaign titled "Rio for Real: Toby Ng's Olympic Run". The goal of the fundraising campaign is to raise $20,000 to assist the Mixed Doubles team of Toby and Alex to travel and compete internationally in order to accrue enough World Ranking Points to qualify for the Canadian Olympic Team. For more details on or to donate to Toby's fundraising campaign please click the following link: https://www.gofundme.com/tobyngrioforreal

When brainstorming a way that the MBA could assist Toby it was clear that a Doubles Athlete Clinic would offer a lot of value to local athletes, coaches and badminton enthusiasts alike, while still achieving the goal of assisting Toby in his Olympic run. Toby Ng has been brought to Manitoba multiple times before in the hopes of tapping into his knowledge on doubles and mixed doubles and these camps have always been successful. Toby and Alex will be coming to Winnipeg for the upcoming Prairie Senior Elite making this the perfect opportunity to conduct this clinic.

The Athlete Clinic Details are as follows:

Sunday, October 25th: 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. @ College Louis Riel

Monday, October 26th: 5:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. @ The University of Winnipeg

Cost: $70 ($60 for member of the High Performance Program)

All funds raised go directly to Toby's fundraising campaign.

Spectators are encouraged to donate.

Wildewood sports club facing demolition for condos

September 18, 2015

Jeff Keele, CTV Winnipeg

The Wildewood Club in south Winnipeg could soon be replaced by a large housing unit.

A city report recommends demolishing the club to construct 14 townhouses and a five-storey, 41-unit building.

In order to do that, the property would have to be re-zoned from park land to multi-family housing.

A public hearing was scheduled the evening of Wednesday, Sept. 16 in front of the City Centre Community Committee.

The committee approved the application.

That same committee turned down a similar proposal for the site in 2012.

The plan will require further approval at City Hall.

The North American Indigenous Games Council (NAIG Council) awarded the 2017 NAIG to

Toronto, Ontario, Canada in a vote that took place during the NAIG Council’s Board of Directors meeting

in Richmond, British Columbia.

The bid to host the Games in Toronto, led by the Aboriginal Sport & Wellness Council of Ontario and the

Mississaugas of New Credit First Nation, received unanimous support from the NAIG’s International

Governing Body. Toronto’s selection will mark the first time in the Games twenty-five year history that

the event will be held in a community outside of Western Canada. The awarding of the 2017 NAIG

follows a comprehensive bid process involving the preparation and submission of a bid book, a site

evaluation, and the Bid Committee’s final bid presentation in Richmond.

“Congratulations to the Aboriginal Sport & Wellness Council of Ontario (ASWCO) and Mississaugas of

New Credit First Nation on the selection to host the 2017 NAIG in the city of Toronto,” said NAIG Council

President Rick Brant. “The Council was extremely impressed by the level of detail presented by the Bid

Committee and their high degree of professionalism. We are excited about the opportunity to gather

our Indigenous Nations in Toronto in the summer of 2017. It will be an extraordinary celebration of

athletic excellence, cultural unity and pride.”

Toronto 2017 NAIG Bid Committee chairperson, Marc Laliberte states “The Aboriginal Sport & Wellness

Council of Ontario is tremendously proud and happy to be awarded the 2017 North American

Indigenous Games in the greater Toronto area. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission has stressed

the importance of NAIG as a means of healing and strengthening our people. We are excited to begin

planning, knowing the experience will be incredible – with world class facilities and rich cultural

programming. We will honour and respect the Spirit of the NAIG – Strong, Brave, True.”

Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation Chief Bryan LaForme attended the final bid presentation

with Councillor Larry Sault in support of ASWCO’s bid to host the 2017 NAIG, “We are looking forward to

welcoming the Indigenous youth and their families from across Turtle Island to our traditional territory.

The Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation are honoured and excited to host the next set of the

North American Indigenous Games, and provide a good follow up to hosting the Pan Am / Para-Pan

Following awarding of the 2017, the Toronto 2017 NAIG Bid Committee has several tasks to undertake in

a 6-month period to form a host society which includes; recruit board of directors, incorporate an

independent non-profit organization, confirm financial commitments and submit a business plan.

Marj Niemi is a National Umpire!

May 20, 2015

Congratulations to Marj Niemi for gaining her national umpire certification.

Marj Niemi recently completed her evaluation for the national umpire certification during 2015 JR & U23 Canadian Badminton Championships. Marj is also a NCCP level 2 technical certified coach, the co-chair of Eastman Open Badminton Tournament, and was the female recipient of the Sportmanship Award at Badminton Manitoba Awards Banquet in 2012.

The Umpire in badminton takes responsibility for running individual matches. He or she is responsible for making all final decisions for points awarded in a match. Umpires are mandatory for final matches in the MBA Provincial Closed and Junior Closed, as well as any Badminton Canada or World Badminton Federation tournaments.

How do I become an Official?

Official hopefuls must go through the following steps to be certified as a regional umpire.

Attend Rules/Official's Clinic
Pass Examination
Complete Training Hours

*The current official's development program is under review for the purpose of improving development opportunities.

Why should I become an Umpire?

This is your opportunity to contribute to the sport of badminton! There is always a need to train new officials as changes in circumstances, age, or other factors deplete our numbers. This is not a time consuming job. In most cases you officiate the finals of a tournament on the occasional Sunday. Because some officials may not be available for the finals of a specific tournament, it’s important to have adequate numbers to avoid this problem. This is where you can really contribute!

In addition you also get compensated for your time and should you choose to pursue achieving a higher level of Umpiring you will benefit from many opportunities to travel across this great Country of ours ensuring the smooth operation of Tournaments across Canada. Badminton played at a high level is very exciting!

Sport MB Names Phase Two: Qualico Training Centre

May 20, 2015

Sport Manitoba Announces Significant Contribution from Qualico to Help Build the Canada Games Sport for Life Centre

Winnipeg, Manitoba – Today, Qualico gave generously to our Canada Games Sport for Life Centre Capital Campaign. We honoured that generosity by naming Phase Two of the Canada Games Sport for Life Centre the Qualico Training Centre. Qualico is one of the largest fully integrated, privately-owned real estate companies in Western Canada.

The Qualico Training Centre is a 120,000 square foot addition to the Canada Games Sport for Life Centre and is a key legacy project for the 2017 Canada Summer Games. Construction of the Qualico Training Centre is scheduled to begin later this summer.

“We are tremendously grateful for Qualico's support of our capital campaign,” said Paul Robson, Co-Chair Canada Games Sport for Life Centre Capital Campaign. “Qualico's generosity will create significant lasting impacts as we continue to positively build our communities and neighborhoods through sport. While our private capital campaign has been successful, additional support is still required.”

"Qualico is committed to supporting the services and facilities that assist in improving the quality of lives in our neighbourhoods and applaud those with the vision for this wonderful facility. We are also committed to the redevelopment of the downtown area of Winnipeg as you can see with our residential projects in the Exchange area, so we share a common goal for this project,” said Kevin Van, Vice President of Qualico.

“ The Qualico Training Centre will host community programming for more than 100,000 kids and adults every year,” said Jeff Hnatiuk, President & CEO, Sport Manitoba. “Helping these kids to learn, grow and be active for life. Quadruple-Triple for Haley
Manitou Raised Badminton Star Refuses to Quit Winning

UofW Duckworth Centre, April 10-12 – Manitoba crowns it's 2015 provincial champions amongst a very competitive field at the UofW Duckworth Centre; which includes Manitou-raised Haley Nakonechnywho earned her fourth Triple Crown victory in a row.

First it was the Junior Provincial Championships in January, then it was the Winnipeg Winter Club Open in February. In March, she took victories over Manitoba and Ontario in the Pal Chawla Manitoba Junior Open. Well now the Bell of the Ball took home the Triple Crown AGAIN; this time at the most competitive tournament so far, the Yonex Provincial Championships at UofW Duckworth Centre.

"This Manitou-raised badminton crusher has been tearing up the courts for some time and is really coming into her own on the Provincial Open scene. She has a hard work ethic and focused mentality so we expect that she'll carry this momentum into Junior Nationals at the end of the month", said Provincial Coach Justin Friesen.

This being her first full season with consistent training partners, Haley is sure to only improve with time as she moves into the U23 and Open categories. This is her last year in U19 and her last chance to go for a medal in the junior categories at Junior Nationals, in Winnipeg nonetheless.

Provincial Coach Justin Friesen also had this to say, "She's been one of our most talented provincial team members for a number of years now, but she hasn't had the chance to take advantage of a FULL training program including strength training and nutrition consulting. I see this as an advantage over other players because she can peak at the right time. Badminton players should be peaking in their mid to late 20's and unfortunately our local players lots of times will quit at the age of 20. Haley isn't burned out like other Winnipeg players and because of that I'm more excited to see her grow into the Open events and play at the Adult National Championships."

In the other events, Kyle Grymonpre would claim his first Provincial Championship title by beating 2-time champion Andrew Harrison in the Men's Singles Final. Provincial Coach Justin Friesen would pair up with Executive Director Ryan Giesbrecht to win Men's Doubles over former Olympian Anil Kaul and former Junior Pan Am Silver Medalist Sean Chawla. Misilyna Wu Paired up with Haley to win Women's Doubles, and Dale Kinley of the Interlake Badminton Club paired up with Haley to take home the Mixed Doubles.

Tournament Description

The tournament will follow an A/A-Consol B/B-Consol format, with all players starting in A and dropping down to A-Consol if winning first match and then losing second, dropping down to B's if losing first match, , and dropping down to B-Consol if losing first match of B's. The Manitoba Junior Open was re-named the "Pal Chawla" following the retirement of the Winnipeg Winter Club Badminton Professional, Pal Chawla, after 44 years of service. Pal started off his playing career as a teenager in Indian, where he picked up the sport casually one summer and realized he had some potential. Pal eventually went on to play for Team India winning several international competitions and was making his way up in the World Ranking. One extremely hot day however ended his international competing career when he came down with a severe case of heat stroke. Unable to pick up where he left off, he took up coaching and moved to Manitoba where he would find a few jobs before settling at the Winnipeg Winter Club.

Pal and his family have been critical to the development of badminton in Manitoba for over 40 years and he can still be seen around the Winter Club, chatting with members, doing his workouts and watching some badminton.

2015 Western Canadian Team Championship

January 22, 2015

Congratulations to Team Manitoba who competed in the Western Canadian Team Championship.

The Championship was held in Vancouver on January 9-11, 2015, with BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan also competing.

Manitoba sent 8 athletes to the games that consisted of Mark Shinnie, Olivia Meier, Jeevan Khanuja and Claire Meier for

U17. The U15 players consisted of Christopher Wiebe, Jeanette Ding, Anthony Tan and Bodin Boissonneault. Team coach

was Dale Kinley. The team consisted of some veterans and some “newbies” to this particular event. For some team

members this was their first away tournament. Our players learned a great deal about team competition and being

prepared! Although we didn’t come home with a medal, our team bonded, developed new friendships and played.

The event was well run by Penny Gardner, the Executive Director of the Badminton BC and hosted by the Hollyburn

Country Club.

Coach Dale Kinley, who did a wonderful job of coaching the players was very proud of the way his players behaved,

represented the province and performed the whole weekend!

Peter Høg Gade Christensen (born December 14, 1976, in Aalborg, Denmark)[1][2] is a retired Danish professional badmintonplayer. He currently resides in Holte in Copenhagen

If you don't know who Peter Gade is, it's difficult to describe with mere words what he had done for the sport of badminton, how much he has accomplished personally and how dear he is to the sport due to how long he has remained at the top of the game.

But if you were to look online you would find countless videos, stories and documents attesting to his fame within the sport – it surely wouldn't take long for you to find out who he is and what he has done.

Just recently the agressive-style playing Dane decided it was time to put away his racquet from competitive international play. The moment comes almost with a sense of sarcasm to the people who know Gade because we're used to him coming back for yet another year almost every year, and so it's difficult to grasp what the badminton circuit will look like without him. But alas, here we are having to move on looking for the next young badminton star to take his place.

There have been many publications about Gade's retirement:
