Herb Richard MB Open in Review

December 16, 2013

The 2013 Herb Richard was filled with exciting moments and wonderful pictures! Find out more about what happened and see the photos here.

The tournament saw record #'s which can be attributed to a number of factors. With the growing # of tournaments in the schedule, including the Eastman Open, the Winnipeg Winter Club decided to run 1 Open Club tournament this year instead of 2, and they elected to drop the November tournament which means that adults had only 1 tournament to enter prior to the new year, the Herb! Secondly, many more smaller clubs are starting to represent themselves at tournaments with at least a few players!

The tournament ran from Thursday at 5pm to Sunday at 3pm. Local players started on Thursday evening, and out of towners joined the action on Friday at 5pm. The players had to endure long days; Friday night went until 1am, and Saturday ran from 9am – 11pm!!!

Players travelled long ways to make the tournament, including players from Fort Frances, Thunder Bay, Vita, Whitemouth, Brandon, Manitou and Minot (North Dakota). It's always such an extreme pleasure to have these players at the tournament because they really add depth and more interesting draws to the weekend.

Sunday finals are always exciting, and the new format of games being ordered in A (court 2), B (court 3), A-Consol (court 4) and B-Consol (court 5) was a good change of pace that really showed appreciation to the B-level players.

King's Head Pub was once again the title sponsor for a sanctioned badminton tournament, and because of this, the winners and runner-ups were treated to a substantial gift certificate to King's Head Pub. Thank you to Jay for sponsoring the Manitoba Open and making our event even better than last year!

The Final Winners from each category can be seen here: http://www.tournamentsoftware.com/sport/winners.aspx?id=14829C4B-637A-46F8-8924-53774CF833F7

MBA Welcomes Grunthal Sensation Justin Friesen as Provincial Coach!

November 14, 2013

It's with great pleasure that the MBA, it's staff, board of directors, and the selection committee announce the hiring of Justin Friesen as Provincial Coach!

Learn more about Justin Friesen here….

Justin Friesen grew up in the Rural Manitoba town of Grunthal before moving to Winnipeg to pursue a degree in the field of Kinesiology at the University of Winnipeg. These days Justin is a well-known badminton player in Manitoba through multiple capacities including player, coach, official and volunteer, however it was his first year of university that his recreational roots blossomed to full time interest at the UofW Badminton Club. Since that time there was no looking back as he pursued badminton at a higher level in any way possible.

Justin's badminton resume now includes the following:

  • Multiple time Manitoba Provincial Finalist and 2012 Herb Richard MB Open Doubles Champion
  • Team Manitoba High Performance Player (2011-13)
  • Developmental Winter Program Head Coach
  • Summer Badminton Camp Head Coach
  • Identified Player Program Assistant Coach
  • Prairie Badminton Development (Wildewood Club) Badminton Pro/Head Coach
  • Winnipeg Winter Club Assistant Coach
  • 2010 Power Smart Manitoba Winter Games Head Coach (Team Winnipeg Blue)
  • 2014 Power Smart Manitoba Winter Games Head Coach (Team Winnipeg Blue)
  • Head Coach and Assistant Coach for multiple athlete clinics hosted privately and through MBA
  • NCCP Level 2 Certified Coach (Level 3 In Progress)
  • Provincially Certified Referee
  • Nationally Certified Umpire
  • MBA Administrative Assistant (May 2009 – September 2010)
  • MBA Interim Executive Director (2 months in 2010)

Although Justin's resume is very impressive, it doesn't do justice to the passion and love for badminton that he has shown day to day throughout the years. You could find Justin playing badminton at the Winnipeg Winter Club, University of Winnipeg, or anywhere else that he may have stumbled across courts in Winnipeg and Rural Manitoba!

Justin will be starting as Provincial Coach on Dec. 1, 2013.

You will be able to contact him at:

Yonex Prairie Senior Elite Results

October 29, 2013

3 medals and 2 fourth place finishes at the 2nd stop of the Senior Circuit.

The weekend was highlighted by David Snider taking 2 silver medals, Kathryne Desautels and Melissa Liew taking home bronze in women's doubles, and David Harrison placing 4th in both men's singles and men's doubles with brother Andrew Harrison.

The tournament wasn't without it's interesting moments. The first came when 4 women's singles athletes took to the courts and played the wrong players, a first according to many people's recollection. After 60 minutes of competing, the girls had to take a 20 minute break and start over again against the correct opponent!

All settled down though and the competition was intense on all accounts. Spectators were treated to the heavy smashing and defense of men's doubles, the grace and fitness of men's and women's singles, and the strategic placement of mixed doubles.

Manitoba had 27 out of 47 entries all together, making up 57% of the draw. The other players predominantly came from Ontario and Quebec, with a few ringers from Alberta.

Manitoba saw plenty of success overall, but a few performances stood tall.

David Snider played his way through Michael McCaffrey (MB), Graydon Robb (AB), #3/4 seed Him Lam (ONT) and #2 seed Phillipe Gaumond (QC) before losing to #1 seed Joseph Rogers in the final. Snider also paired up with Joseph Rogers in men's doubles and they powerhoused their way through Dale Kinley/Ian Laidlaw (MB), Him Lam/Graydon Robb (ONT/AB) and #1 seeds Maxime Belanger/Phillippe Gaumond (QC) to get to the men's doubles final. Unfortunately David Snider sustained a shoulder injury and wasn't able to play the men's doubles final.

Kathryne Desautels/Melissa Liew found themselves in a 7-team women's doubles draw and up against fellow Manitobans Cynthia Barkman/Misilyna Wu in the first round. They would win their first round, and then fall to the #2 seeds, Caroline Beauregard/Caroline Vezina (QC) in the semi-finals. Up against another french team and #3/4 seeds Amelie/Isabelle Vezina in the 3rd place match, Kat/Mel would take bronze in a tight 3-game fight!

David Harrison had to play through Michael Lennox (ONT) in the first round, 5/8 seed Andrew Wilkinson in the second round and 3/4 seed Andrew Lau in the Quarters before playing #1 seed Joseph Rogers (ONT) in the semis. Although he lost to Joe in the semis, he would on to play #2 Phillippe Gaumond in the 3rd place match, and after about an hour of hard battling at the end of a long weekend, Phillippe would get bronze and David Harrison with the 4th place finish.

David would pair with brother Andrew Harrison as a 3/4 seed in men's doubles. They would play 2 Manitoban teams in a row before playing #2 seeds Andrew Wilkinson/Andrew Lau in the semi's. In a close 3-gamer, the Harrison's would be knocked into the 3rd place match. They would unfortunately have to play the #1 seeds Phillipee Gaumond and Maxime Belanger, and they would end with a 4th place finish overall.

City Jr Open Results

October 23, 2013

See how all the athletes did in the first junior tournament of the year!

The City Jr Open, typically an U12/U14/U16 event, this time around included the U19 category. Although the U19 age category brought some faster smashes and longer rallies, the U14 and U16 categories proved to be the highest participation rate for all the age groups.

Starting with U12 Boys Singles, Joel Rivard of the Winnipeg Winter Club was able to walk home with the Gold Medal, while Cole Anderson and Brandon Lockhart went home with the Silver and Consolation, respectively.

It was quite the scene looking out at all 4 courts on Sunday afternoon as the U14 Boys and Girls Singles were about to begin; only 2 out of the 8 athletes on court had even attended the City Jr Open last year! The new faces sure made for a wonderful tournament and every athlete brought to the table a fresh and invigorating energy!

The Nichols Brothers, Kyi and Joel, both made it to their first final, in their first sanctioned tournament EVER! Joel Nichols beat #2 seed Nicholas Lengsavath in the semi-final, which punched his ticket to the main round final against Fort Frances player, Aaron Bujold. Aaron Bujold would prove to be too much for Joel on this day, 21-11 21-10. Brother Kyi won his match in the consolation finals against Jaden Maki of Eastman (Lac du Bonnet).

Claire Meier, WWC, being the only finals player who played in this tournament last year, took the main round gold in her matchup against newcomer Jeanette Ding, IPP, in an exciting match that ended 21-11 21-8. Niti Mehta, WWC, played Katarina Kasowan, Eastman, in the consolation final and Niti ended victorious with the 3-game winner, 21-23 21-5 21-5.

In U16 the fans were treated to a few powerful matchups – Kinsley Sorenson, Whitemouth, would beat Olivia Meier, WWC, in the Girls Singles Final, while #2 seed Arnish Patel would beat #1 seed Paul Brown in the Boys Singles final 21-19 21-15.

The consolation titles were taken by Ryne Sitar, Whitemouth, and Heidi Cloutier, WWC.

Felix Tessier and Haley Nakonechny, WWC, would both go home with 2 gold medals and a silver medal, while Helen Cheung, WWC, walked away with two golds of her own, and Bryan Liew, WWC, went home with a Gold and Silver.

Junior MB’s Seeded at Prairie Junior Elite

October 3, 2013

Felix Tessier, Paul Brown and Serena Lam all are graced with seeds at the Black Knight Prairie Junior Elite.

Saskatoon, SK, Oct. 4-6, 2013 – Felix Tessier, Serena Lam and Paul Brown all enter into the Black Knight Prairie Junior Elite this weekend with a bit more weight on their shoulders than usual. They have all been seeded either #1 or #3/4 in at least one event, which means they won't have to face another seeded athlete for at least the first couple rounds; but how will this affect their performance?

Felix Tessier is seeded #1 in boys singles due to his consistent and solid performance in last year's circuit of national tournaments while being one of the young guys in the pack. Now that he's a year older and can be considered one of those boys with plenty of experience, his performance and ranking points from last year have gained him the honors of being the #1 seed. This may frighten some people, but Felix is used to being a #1 seed as he's been our top U14 and U16 player for a couple years now, is now part of Manitoba's High Performance Training Squad, and is used to playing with the "big boys" of Manitoba.

Felix's partner in boys doubles is Paul Brown and they have been given a 3/4 seed for U16 boys doubles. Although these boys play at different clubs in Winnipeg (Rady JCC for Paul Brown; Winnipeg Winter Club for Felix), they have played extremely well in both junior and senior tournaments in Manitoba, and have consistently played well at junior national tournaments.

Now let's talk about fearless. Serena Lam was only 16 years old when she moved in with her sister in BC to train at one of the premier badminton clubs in Canada. Most kids at 16 would have separation anxiety being so far from home, but Serena has faced this challenge with fearlessness and has shown mental and physical maturity in the last year. She is now 17, still a full year behind the oldest girls in the U19 category, and she's seeded #3/4 in U19 Girls Singles. Her drive to become a better athlete seems relentless, and can be partly attributed to the fact that her older sister is a 2-Time Junior Manitoba Champion and 1-Time Manitoba Provincial Champion. Serena's older sister was part of Team Manitoba for the 2011 Canada Winter Games, and this time around little sister Serena is on the training squad, trying to find a spot on the team for the 2015 Canada Winter Games.

The athletes start competition tomorrow, Friday Oct. 4, at 10:00am. Results, which are updated every few hours, can be viewed online at: http://badmintoncanada.tournamentsoftware.com/sport/draws.aspx?id=5071A4DC-24C5-4840-AB9A-BE9C676F7F3F.

Good luck to all Manitobans!

Manitoba Wins Provincial Bid for Tournament Hosting Rights!

April 29, 2013

Manitoba will be the host of the 2015 Jr & U23 National Badminton Championships!

2015 Yonex Jr & U23 National Badminton Championships will be held in…..

WINNIPEG!!!!

In a bid process that allowed 3 months of preparations, the Manitoba Badminton Association was able to put together a very competitive bid, enough to convince Badminton Canada that Winnipeg would be the best place to host the 2015 National Championships.

This isn't the first large scale badminton event that Manitoba has hosted. In fact, we hosted the 2010 National Badminton Championships, the 2009 Team Canada National Team Camp, and the 2007 Jr. National Championships, just to name a few.

Manitoba has a reputation of hosting some of the best tournaments in Canada and we would like to live up to this reputation and exceed it in 2015.

Coach Tasia Writes About Her Trip to Sanikiluaq, Nunavut

March 12, 2013

Coaching not only can be a very gratifying experience, but it can take you to very interesting places. Read and take a look at the photos in Tasia's Blog from her most recent trip to the middle of the Hudson Bay to instruct badminton for athletes and coaches.

Badminton reaches all areas.

In January I was fortunate enough to be asked to run a clinic for the level one NCCP course in Sanikiluaq, Nunavut from February 18-22. As we worked out the logistics for the trip I began to learn more about the destination. Sanikiluaq is a small isolated hamlet (small settlement) on the Belcher Islands in Hudson Bay. I didn’t really know what to expect travelling to a small community in the North as the furthest North I’d been was travelling to Whitehorse for the Canada Winter Games in 2007. My experience in Whitehorse, while amazing, would be nothing like Sanikiluaq. In Whitehorse we travelled as a team and stayed with thousands of other athletes in a little village with game rooms, dances and much more to keep us entertained. In Sanikiluaq I was actually going to get the chance to experience life in the town as the locals do (or as close to it as I could get).

At 4 a.m. Friday morning I headed off to the Kivalliq Inuit Centre in Winnipeg where I met up with some local Sanikiluaq people who were in town. On the way to the airport I was introduced to all of them. I learned that I was travelling with the father of one of the kids signed up for the course, the mother of another as well as one woman who was participating in the course. What a small world. When I stepped off the 16-passenger plane onto the tarmac in Sanikiluaq, I could tell that this place was going to be nothing like anywhere I’d ever been before. Other than the tiny airport we were walking towards, there was nothing around. It was a desert, white everywhere we looked with a couple of hills in the distance.

At the airport the principal of the local high school was waiting to drive me into the town in his SUV. He let me know that I probably shouldn’t have to worry about polar bears as some hunters had spotted a couple of belugas trapped 4 hours from town and there was a hole in the ice so the bears were dragging them up onto the ice and killing them. Welcome to the North.

Other than the airport, the first visible structure is a frame with a cross on top that serves as the entrance to their cemetery. White crosses litter the whiter snow and to your left you see buildings in the distance at the bottom of a hill. It is a short drive into town, where we drove past the elementary school, the high school and the medical centre before pulling up at a grey building with two entrances that serves as the Hamlet (a sort of town hall/office) and the hotel where we would be staying. The man running the clinic was rather sick so he called to make sure I had arrived alright and would be able to entertain myself for the day as we weren’t scheduled to play until Saturday afternoon. I went for a walk around town, but didn’t run into anyone so I sat on an empty play structure watching some skidoos go by.

Saturday, I was expecting to watch the students play badminton and assess their abilities, but an Elder in the community passed away and everything was cancelled out of respect. Quite a difference from the city, where a death would affect everyone in the family, but goes unnoticed by everyone else. In Sanikiluaq the stores were closed, the evening’s bingo session was cancelled (a bigger deal than you would think when there isn’t much to do in the evenings) and all sports were cancelled as well. However, I got a tour of the beautiful Paatsaali High School and checked out the gym where we would be running the course. I later learned that “Paatsaali” means two-man canoe in Inuktitut.

The next day I returned and was delightfully surprised by the level of talent displayed by the kids who were going to be participating in the course.

A Paatsaali (two man canoe) that is displayed in the entrance to the Paatsaali High School.

Afterwards, the teacher who organized the clinic through Badminton Manitoba and Nunavut Badminton took me for a ride on his skidoo so I could take photos of the town and of Hudson’s Bay. On the ride I was told that I had to keep an eye out for Polar bears and foxes (which are assumed to be rabid and have been coming into town recently). Although we spotted fox tracks, no wildlife was seen. We drove past the dog sled team, but they are not pets and we were not allowed to get very close. Just driving past made them hopeful that we were bringing some food so we moved on fairly quickly.

The local dog sled team (from a safe distance).

With only 3 people wishing to be certified as level one coaches and about 36 people signed up for the session, we ran an intensive version of the NCCP coaching course. Instead of briefly going over every skill, we did in depth work on every skill and many drills and games to improve the player’s skills. By the end of the week, players as young as 12 had put in 15 hours of training and some of the older kids had done closer to 27 hours.

Some of the participants playing in the Paatsaali High School gym.

During the week some locals used the school as a location to prepare a polar bear hide. The pads were sewn back onto the paws, because it makes the hide more valuable and then the hide is stretched over a wooden frame. Later, it will be cleaned by dragging it behind a skidoo across clean snow in order to remove any remaining fat and blood.

A polar bear hide being tied to a frame to stretch it and later clean it.

There was also a seal hunt and some of the seals were being cleaned in the building. The seal skins were also stretched, but inside frames instead of over top of them.

As they stretch the sealskins they will sew shut the armholes and you won’t even be able to tell that the holes were ever there.

Throughout the week the belugas that were trapped in the ice were a big news story and on Friday the hunters were reporting that19 belugas had been killed by polar bears. The coast guard was unable to help so despite beluga being an endangered species, the hunters brought 6 back to town. I was offered some raw beluga to eat, one piece with skin and one piece without. The beluga from which they cut my pieces had scratches on it from where the beluga had been attacked by a polar bear.

This piece of beluga has scratches on it from the polar bear that attacked it.

The week was busy and exciting and unfortunately it ended too soon. You never know where badminton will take you. I started playing badminton when I was 13 and coaching a few years later. I have travelled to almost every province and territory and the people I have met never cease to amaze me. Here are some of the lovely people I met in Sanikiluaq.

This trip was a great way to encourage badminton in a part of Canada that I would not otherwise have gotten a chance to travel to.

Tournament Description

The 2013 Yonex Pal Chawla Manitoba Junior Open is an annual event held in Manitoba to "wrap up" the winter badminton season with some matches for badminton players of all skill levels, and celebrate a year well done with a fun and eventful banquet on the Saturday night. This tournament is open to any athletes whom are within the junior age categories; whether you're from Manitoba or Timbuktu, you can take part in the action! You may sign up for 3 events total. The entry fee is $50.00 for two or more events, and that includes the fee to enter into the banquet!

The tournament has adopted the addition of the name "Pal Chawla" to it's title in honoring the former Winnipeg Winter Club's Badminton Professional of 40 years. Pal Chawla officially retired last fall after 44 years of dedicated service as a Professional Coach in Canada – 43 of these years in Manitoba, and 40 of those years at the WWC. Pal has coached athletes of all skill levels and from all walks of life. His experience, skill and enthusiasm are some of his best qualities that he offered on the court as a player and coach, but they are almost overdone by his amazing dedication to the sport in volunteering his time at sporting events and hosting National and Provincial events. For these reasons and many more, we are happy to honor his dedication to the sport by naming the Manitoba Junior Open after him! The winner of both Girl's and Boy's Singles in the U19 category will have their names engraved on the all new Pal Chawla Trophy, which is currently situated at the Winnipeg Winter Club.

Jr. Banquet – Saturday March 16, 2013 @ Winnipeg Winter Club (Upstairs in the Tennis Gallery!)

The awards for Badminton Ambassador, Most Improved and Triple Crowns will be given out, and participants can look forward to Great Food! Great Prizes! and Great Entertainment!

Prizes for the Jr. Wind-Up are being accepted until Friday March 8. If you have any new items that you can donate, we strongly appreciate you dropping them off at Winnipeg Winter Club with Janet Thorpe.

2013 Westman Open – Cancelled Due to Construction

February 15, 2013

Due to Construction of the new gym facility at Brandon University, the very popular Westman Open Badminton Tournament will be cancelled for 2013.

Brandon University has been constructing it's new gymnasium for quite some time and it has been creating it's share of constraints on local sports clubs and teams that typically use gym space at Brandon University. The Brandon Club has been one of them that has struggled to find other places to play while all the construction has been going on.

The new facility, which they're calling the "Healthy Living Centre", will be a state of the art facility to host more elaborate events, with better seating, better court space, new gym equipment and a wider service to the general public and the students at Brandon University. You can see it here: http://www.brandonu.ca/hlc/

The Brandon Badminton Club, which is the host of the Westman Open, would like to give their regrets and they hope to see you all at the 2014 Westman Open!

In the meantime, you may be interested in one of our other upcoming nylon shuttle tournaments – The Seniors & Masters (30+ & 45+) in Selkirk, MB, & the B&C Championships (No "A" players) at 17 Wing Badminton Club.

Tournament Description

The 2012 Manitoba B & C Championships is an annual event held at 17 Wing. No "A" players are permitted to play in this tournament, which means it is an ideal scenario for players who would be intimidated by playing "Open" tournaments that attract some of the bigger names. Even more attractive is the fact that the winners of the B&C are also honored at Badminton Manitoba's Annual Awards Banquet (April 6, 2013) with verbal recognition, and the names are engraved onto the B&C Placque kept by Badminton Manitoba.

This tournament is both fun and competitive for all skill levels (…..excluding "A" – but they can have fun watching)

You may sign up for 3 events total. The entry fee is $55.00, regardless of how many events you enter.

2013 Yonex Eastman Open

View Results HERE

The Second Annual Yonex Eastman Open was hosted by the Whitemouth, St. Pierre and Lac du Bonnet Badminton Clubs this past weekend at Steinbach Regional Secondary School. This years tournament saw a drastic increase in the number of
participants from the previous year with 81 athletes, primarily from the Eastman Region, Kenora, and St. Jean Baptiste, competing in U14, U16, U19, and Open categories.

Congratulations to all the winners, especially Kinsley Sorenson (Whitemouth, U16) and Chris Berard (St. Pierre, Open) who were triple crown winners.

The tournament was also the identification camp for the Eastman Training Squad that will be training in preparation for the Eastman Qualifier and the 2014 Manitoba Winter Games. With many strong players competing in all junior categories, there is a lot of potential for the Eastman Team at the upcoming games. Those athletes who were identified by the Eastman coaching staff will be contacted over the next few weeks.

Thank-you to all the volunteers and sponsors who helped make this years tournament a success. The sponsors for this event included Yonex, Racquets Pro Shop, Winnipeg's Creative Studio, Funk's Toyota, Steinbach Credit Union, and Steinbach Dodge-Chrysler- Jeep.

This tournament will also serve as the Athlete Identifications for Team Eastman in the 2014 Manitoba Winter Games. Team Eastman's coaches, Mike Carter and Melanie Cure, as well as Team Manager Marj Niemi will be scouting athletes born 1996 or later, and 2000 or later to join the Team Eastman Training Squad. These athletes will have the opportunity to train together throughout the summer and fall of 2013 in preparations for the final tryouts. More information will become available prior to the 2013 Yonex Eastman Open. For more details on the 2014 MWG, please visit our website at www.manitobagamesbadminton.com

Badminton Legend Peter Gade Coming to Canada

January 23, 2013

If there's a chance you could be there, you don't want to miss this!

Peter Høg Gade Christensen (born December 14, 1976, in Aalborg, Denmark)[1][2] is a retired Danish professional badminton player. He currently resides in Holte in Copenhagen

If you don't know who Peter Gade is, it's difficult to describe with mere words what he had done for the sport of badminton, how much he has accomplished personally and how dear he is to the sport due to how long he has remained at the top of the game.

But if you were to look online you would find countless videos, stories and documents attesting to his fame within the sport – it surely wouldn't take long for you to find out who he is and what he has done.

Just recently the agressive-style playing Dane decided it was time to put away his racquet from competitive international play. The moment comes almost with a sense of sarcasm to the people who know Gade because we're used to him coming back for yet another year almost every year, and so it's difficult to grasp what the badminton circuit will look like without him. But alas, here we are having to move on looking for the next young badminton star to take his place.

There have been many publications about Gade's retirement:

http://www.globaltimes.cn/content/752825.shtml

http://www.badzine.net/features/peter-gade-the-last-good-bye-of-a-great-champion/21938/

http://www.firstpost.com/sports/great-dane-gade-happy-to-pass-baton-to-next-generation-507540.html

You can also watch Peter Gade's last career match versus World #1, two-time Olympic Champion and arguably the best badminton player ever, Lin Dan, at the 2012 Copenhagen Masters:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d59I52u2A8E

Well fortunately we don't have to move on yet because ClearOne Badminton Centre in Richmond is bringing Retired Legend Peter Gade to it's facility on Saturday Feb. 8th to play in an exhibition! Early Bird Tickets can be purchased prior to Feb. 1, 2013.

This year's WWC Invitational is sponsored by both Yonex, Mortgage Castle Group and Racquets Pro Shop. It looks like another exciting tournament with plenty of depth to the A's, B's, C's and D's, and we hope to see you out there on the courts working on your game by competing with different players from the neighborhood.

Don't have a partner? Put partner required and we'll do our best to pair people up, however please be aware that not all players will receive a partner.

Shuttles: Feather Shuttles will be used. Please be aware that shuttles may require speed testing before match begins.

2013 Phil Allard Doubles Badminton Tournament

January 21, 2013

5th Annual Phil Allard Memorial Doubles Badminton tournament will commence this weekend!

The Fifth Annual Phil Allard Memorial Doubles Badminton tournament will be January 26th and January 27th, 2013, at the Rady JCC on Doncaster. This tournament is in memory of a long-time badminton player, Phil Allard, who passed away several years ago and was an inspirational figure in badminton for many of the players in Manitoba today.

The attached poster has information on the tournament. We will start at 9:30 am on the 26th, and will go until about 5:30 pm. Sunday will start at 9 am and go until about 1 pm.

You will be able to register on the Rady JCC website — http://radyjcc.com/template.cfm?tID=51#p480. You have to scroll down to the bottom of the list of badminton programs. Be sure to include the names of your partners, if you need a partner or not, and your t-shirt size, in the "Comments" box when registering.

The cost will be $35 for Rady members, and $40 for non-Rady members. We had to increase the cost a bit from last year because we fell short a few hundred dollars, and the $5 increase should insure that we have enough funds for t-shirts, birdies, prizes, and court rentals. Any extra money we have will go towards door prizes.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact Ian Clara — his information is also in the attached poster. If you are on Facebook, look for the Phil Allard Memorial Doubles Tournament 2013 group, and ask to join — we'll be posting a lot of information on there, and you can also use it to find partners if you need them.

Manitoba Juniors Take Home Bronze!

January 17, 2013

Manitoba beat Saskatchewan to claim bronze at the Western Canadian Team Championships. Read the review here!

Manitoba sent their Junior Badminton Team to compete in the 2013 Western Canadian Team Championships in Saskatoon this past week-end, taking home the bronze medal. With 8 players ranging in age from 12 to 14, for a few of the players it was their first “away” tournament offering them a great chance to see how they measured up against some of Canada’s best players. Alberta and British Columbia, placed gold and silver respectively with some of their junior players having international competition experience.

Both our under-16 group and under-14 competed extremely well, with stand out performances by Felix Tessier, Colleen Gillespie, Arnish Patel and Daniel Liew, winning all their matches against Saskatchewan, both in qualifying and medal round games. Manitoba’s Daniel Liew, one of our under-14 boys singles players, took Alberta’s gold metal team player to three games, giving him a very tough and long fight.

Paul Brown, Kinsley Sorenson, Olivia Meier and Claire Meier also competed very strongly, winning games and pushing themselves to near exhaustion for their team and the bronze medal placing.

In the finals, Manitoba played Saskatchewan, winning nine games to six.

Badminton Manitoba Coach, Prit Pachu, was very pleased with his young teams performance and the overall experience they received at the tournament.

Western Canadian Team Championship tryouts were in Winnipeg last October, with the top two athletes from girls and boys in the under-14 and under-16 events qualifying for the team. Alberta will be hosing the 2014 Western Canadian Team Championships next year.

Thank you Bea Rasmidatta for the write-up and Don Gillespie for the beautiful photos!
