Passing of Don Newhouse
November 30, 2012
MBA remembers long-time player and national official, Don Newhouse.
Although not many details are confirmed, it is with great sadness that the Manitoba Badminton Association must inform its members of the passing of National Referee, Don Newhouse.
Don has been involved with badminton for over 40 years and is known today across Canada as one of the most knowledgeable officials in the game. When the Canadian Badminton Association created its national officials association, Don was named as one of Manitoba’s original five national officials, and Just last year he received the “official of the year” award from Badminton Canada.
Don spent lots of his time visiting his mother, Margaret Newhouse. Margaret says that he passed away happily, after a weekend doing what he loved most, badminton. She said that it was typical for Don’s conversation to revolve around badminton, but most recently it was an increasing amount, showing that it truly was his passion in life. She was glad to see that he was officiating the weekend of his passing.
The obituary should be available in papers early next week.
We will be having a moment to commemorate Don at this upcoming year’s 20th Annual Awards Banquet on Saturday April 6th, 2013. We ask that if you have had a relationship with Don over the years, that you submit to us a sentiment or well-wishes that we can include in a slide show. Also if you have any photos of Don over the years, either as a player, official or at badminton events, we would appreciate your generosity in providing them to us for the slide show.
In loving memory.

Thompson/Cross Lake: Weekend Events
September 11, 2012
This past weekend, September 7-9, a few of MBA's coaches and high performance athletes were able to take a trip up north to promote badminton at the recreational level.
Day one was full of driving on the #6 highway, most of which was spent in full anticipation of the amazing badminton that would be promoted the next day in Thompson!
Day two started with a trip to the new Thompson Regional Community Centre (http://www.thompson.ca/index.

Thompson Badminton Club President Todd Harwood was kind enough to arrange with the facility that we come to participate in this event in such an interactive way. In case you have never been, Northern Manitoba is filled with many beautiful sights, and Todd along with his wife and their baby girl were able to take us through a tour of some of the sights that Thompson and surrounding area had to offer. The photos of the Airplane and the Miner are both sights found right in Thompson, and the photos of the suspension bridge and the waterfall are both at Pisew Falls. What a beautiful place to be.

Next stop was Cross Lake where we were scheduled to run a Coaches Clinic on the Sunday morning and afternoon. As you can see from the photos, we had a great group who showed that they were not only able to take in the immense amount of information in the one day, but they were able to physically keep up all day and showed great enthusiasm. Cross Lake will surely be in good hands for badminton this year. Thank you to those who came out for the coaches clinic!

Northern Manitoba should keep an eye out for Northern Manitoba badminton players as they compete annually in the Thompson Open Badminton Tournament, as well as in the Frontier Games & Norman Games when they take place. Thanks to the communities for inviting us to come and participate. We'll see you soon!
ps. On the way home, we came awfully close to a the biggest bear you've ever seen in your life!!!!!!!

With an osteopathic based approach all systems of the body are noted: circulatory, lymphatic, respiratory, digestive, muscle, skeletal and nervous. All of these systems work together as one to help the body function, so if one system has an issue it may show related problems on another. Following the assessment a traditional Swedish massage will be performed with advanced techniques that offer therapy to the dysfunctional area being addressed. The first appointment will require 60 minutes for full assessment.
Swedish Massage 30, 45, 60, 90 minutes
This massage begins with a general/verbal assessment keeping the clients lifestyle and complaint in mind. The main purpose is to increase the oxygen flow in the blood and release toxins from the muscles. It helps shorten recovery times from muscular strain by flushing the tissue of lactic acid, uric acid and other metabolic wastes. Swedish massage also stretches the ligaments and tendons keeping them subtle and pliable and stimulates the skin and nervous system. It reduces stress, both emotional and physical.
Sports Massage – Included in treatment time
Sports massage is designed to help prepare the body for optimal performance, recover after a big event or function well during training. It aims to improve the subtleness and flexibility of the muscles and joints, improve blood circulation, speed up healing of damaged or stressed muscles, tissues and joints and prevent future muscles and tendon injuries. Massage helps to release muscle tension and restore balance to the muscular-skeletal system. By receiving regular massages, it may prevent injuries which would otherwise be caused by overuse.
Hot Stone Massage 90 minutes
This massage starts with a general/verbal assessment with the clients lifestyle and complaint in mind. Hot stone massage is a comforting and relaxing type massage used along with a Swedish Massage. Stones are placed under, on top of, and beside the body. The warmth of the stones helps to warm up collagen fibers and relax muscles which allows the therapist to get a little deeper with less effort, which may help for clients who prefer a lighter massage. Hot stone massage my help for back pain and aches, arthritis pain, stress, anxiety, tension, insomnia or depression.
Aromatherapy – May be added to any treatment
Choose from several different blends of oils that enhance your sense of well-being during your treatement. Aromatherapy massage is designed to target the limbic system of the body which controls emotions and influences the nervous system and hormones. When you inhale essential oil molecules, messages are transmitted to the limbic system which affect heart rate, stress level, blood pressure, breathing, memory, digestion and the immune system. Aromatherapy massage is particularly suited to conditions involving stress or improving emotionally-related conditions. Each essential oil that is absorbed into the skin have different healing properties, for example, some calm while some energize.
Caution: not recommended while pregnant, suffering from epilepsy or high blood pressure.
Taping – Included in treatment time
Tape is used after treatment to stabilize any injured body structure such as joints. This is also used to help correct bad postures, strains and displacements, allowing the body to heal in correct alignment. Taping can be used to treat carpal tunnel syndrome, lower back strain/pain, subluxations, herniated disc, knee conditions, shoulder conditions, sports injuries, etc.
Grassroots Badminton Growing like Weeds!
August 15, 2012
Are you interested to know how badminton is growing and developing roots in Manitoba? Simply for informational purposes, here's where you can read all about Manitoba's growing badminton scene.
Grassroots Badminton IN YOUR HOME!
2014 Manitoba Winter Games
There are only nine (9) sports in the 2014 Manitoba Winter Games, which will be in the Morden/Winkler area which was announced just this past February 2012. Of these nine(9) sports is Badminton, and although badminton is not an ice or snow sport, it is primarily played in the winter due to it's indoor nature – which is perfect if you're looking to stay warm in Manitoba!
The Manitoba Winter Games are a joined effort of Sport Manitoba, The Host Community and the respective Provincial Sport Associations (in our case, Manitoba Badminton Association), which is why we are now able to provide more coach and team training for teams whom are developing toward the games. There are eight (8) Manitoba regions and Badminton has some of the biggest participation #'s at the games with sixteen (16) members of each regional team split between U14 and U18 age categories, and also split female/male.
Manitoba Winter Games is one of the few opportunities to experience multi-sport games as an athlete in Manitoba, and is the only multi-sport games offered at the beginning stages of athlete development. Western Canada Summer Games and Canada Winter Games are for more seasoned veterans of the sport, however many of the athletes that compete in these games have competed in the Manitoba Games during their athletic progress!
Sport Manitoba has more information regarding the Manitoba Games (Winter or Summer) at Sport Manitoba's Manitoba Games-Specific Website here: http://www.manitobagames.ca/index.php
To find out more about Badminton in specific at the Manitoba Winter Games, we have developed a wonderful website at http://www.manitobagamesbadminton.com where you can download coach/manager applications, see upcoming coaching/officiating events, tryouts or competitions and even just see how each region is developing their athletes.
Developmental Winter Programs
The Developmental Winter Programs (DWP) continue to be one of our most appreciated and celebrated programs offered to youth ages eight (8) to eighteen (18), adults, and a mixture of adults and kids within Winnipeg.
These programs offer twenty (20) weeks of instructional lessons from some of MBA's top coaches and are capped off with a one (1) day wind-up at College Louis Riel in March. These programs start in October and end in March annually. This year we will be offering programs at College Louis Riel, Ecole Guyot, Highbury, J.B. Mitchell, George McDowell, Shamrock, Van Belleghem, Victor H.L. Wyatt, Viscount Alexander and Leila North (NEW!).
With an average of ten to fifteen (10-15) athletes per program, that brings us to about two hundred (200) to three hundred (300) athletes per year!
We are very excited with how these programs are creating athletes who genuinely love the sport and are playing it at a recreational and competitive basis beyond their high school days. Some athletes from these programs have shown interest in coaching in most recent years as well!
Yonex Summer Badminton Camps
The Yonex Summer Badminton Camps are just coming to an end with the last camp scheduled for next week (Monday to Friday). There were ten (10) camps scheduled within eight (8) weeks, offered at either Winnipeg Winter Club (WWC), Wildewood Club, Teulon Collegiate or St. Andrews School.
Each camp averaged fifteen (15) to twenty (20) athletes which brings us up to at least one hundred fifty (15) young athletes aged nine to eighteen (9-18) who learned all about the basics of badminton and got to meet a lot of other enthusiastic shuttlers!
This year young badminton stars Ian Laidlaw, Andrew Harrison and Zachary Peltz were our main summer camp instructors and they did an amazing job at making it a wonderful experience for all the participants. Of course they had some help from fellow coaches Dale Kinley, Sean Chawla, Matt Younger, Archie Chawla, Kyle Grymonpre and Melissa Liew throughout the eight (8) long weeks of camps! Congratulations to all coaches on a job well done!
First Hit Program – NEW
It is with great pleasure that we announce the beginning of a great opportunity for youth to experience badminton in a positive manner near the beginning of their athletic development.
In partnership with the General Council of Winnipeg Community Centers, we are prepared to launch the "First Hit Program" in eight (8) community centers around Winnipeg for two age groups: seven to nine (7-9) and ten to eleven (10-11)!
Head Coaches will be certified with NCCP and have experience coaching badminton with MBA, but assistant coaches are encouraged to start coaching now – even if you don't have any coaching experience! New coaches will be paired up with experienced coaches to tackle these 8-week long, once/week sessions held at community centers around Winnipeg.
Free Non-Certification Coaching Clinic: Saturday September 29th, 2012 @ College Louis Riel – 9:00am – 2:00pm (30 minute lunch break included)
RSVP Required to admin.assistant@badminton.mb.ca. All participants must be MBA Members ($20.00).

MBA Taking Applications for Provincial Coach

Position: Provincial Coach
Deadline: Friday May 11, 2012
MBA would like to express to it's members that due to unforeseen immigration constraints we were not able to continue forward with our current path in finding our next Provincial Coach. The implications of continuing on our current path to immigrate a coach from Hungary included a significant wait time which exceeds the necessity to move forward with those plans.
We have taken in a great deal of information during the past 8 months which will provide plenty of assistance in our next push to find a Provincial Coach. We value our community and all of its contributing people, which is why we are taking our time to do things in a transparent manner and fair for all parties. We believe that only in this way can we find somebody whom will do the right job.
We wish to apologize to the MBA Members for the delay in hiring a Provincial Coach, however we wish to thank you for your patience and understanding in the fact that we wish to find the right coach for the job.
The MBA is taking applications for the position of Provincial Coach.

Tournament Description
The 2012 Yonex Pal Chawla Manitoba Junior Open is an annual event held in Manitoba to "wrap up" the winter badminton season with some matches for badminton players of all skill levels, and celebrate a year well done with a fun and eventful banquet on the Saturday night. This tournament is open to any athletes whom are within the junior age categories; whether you're from Manitoba or Timbuktu, you can take part in the action! You may sign up for 3 events total. The entry fee is $55.00 regardless of how many events you enter, and that includes the fee to enter into the banquet!
THIS YEAR FOR THE FIRST TIME, the tournament has adopted the addition of the name "Pal Chawla" to it's title in honoring the former Winnipeg Winter Club's Badminton Professional of 40 years. Pal Chawla officially retired this past fall after 44 years of dedicated service as a Professional Coach in Canada – 43 of these years in Manitoba, and 40 of those years at the WWC. Pal has coached athletes of all skill levels and from all walks of life. His experience, skill and enthusiasm are some of his best qualities that he offered on the court as a player and coach, but they are almost overdone by his amazing dedication to the sport in volunteering his time at sporting events and hosting National and Provincial events. For these reasons and many more, we are happy to honor his dedication to the sport by naming the Manitoba Junior Open after him! The winner of both Girl's and Boy's Singles in the U19 category will have their names engraved on the all new Pal Chawla Trophy, which is currently situated at the Winnipeg Winter Club.
