Tournament Description:

The Eastman Open is changing it’s name to Southman Open and moving down to the friendly city of Winkler!

We are excited to move this tournament which has brought out as many as 145 players in the past for some friendly competition and smashing memories, because it aligns us perfectly with Manitoba Winter Games by having a prominent sanctioned tournament in every MWGs Region, and allows us to better service the badminton/athletic community of the South more directly.

This is the perfect tournament for players who have never entered a tournament before and want to get their feet wet.

Perhaps you’ve played in school, really enjoyed it, and maybe even excelled at it; then this is the place to go.

Maybe you’re looking forward to the school badminton season coming up and want to get yourself motivated and have a jump start to your season.

This is also the place for adults who play regularly or semi-regularly; tournaments are not just for the intensely competitive, it is a great opportunity to make friends and memories, and play people you wouldn’t normally get to play.

Regulations:

Refund Policy: Badminton Manitoba does not permit refunds of MBA Memberships or Tournament Registration Fees unless requests are accompanied by a medical note or immediate family crisis.

Availability: Participants must be available to play during the entirety of the events that they are registered for. MBA will not accept special requests for time, for any reason.

Due to the speed of play being unpredictable, participants are asked to be ready a minimum of 30 minutes prior to their posted match. It is ultimately the player’s responsibilityto be present for the start of their match.

The tournament will enforce a strict 10-minute disqualification rule and 2-minute warm-up rule.

Clothing: Participants must have an indoor change of clothing and non-marking athletic shoes

Equipment: Participants must bring their own racquets

Approximate Schedule (Subject to Change Depending on Number of Entries):

Saturday 2:00pm Mixed Doubles Begins

Stefan Carter is Receiving MBA’s Sport for Life Award

November 5, 2018

You are invited to MBA’s presentation of it’s Sport for Life Award to Dr. Stefan Carter on Wednesday, November 7th.

On Wednesday November 7th, 7:30 pm at River Heights Badminton Club (River Heights School; 1350 Grosvenor Ave), the MBA will be awarding Dr. Stefan Carter with the Sport for Life Award recognizing him as an active and avid badminton player who is still playing regularly at the age of 90.

Dr. Carter is an inspirational man who has lived a life so full of experiences, and has learned to love, play, and compete in badminton since 1981. Now at the age of 90, he attends the River Heights Badminton Club, the MBA Access Program and Little Dragons Badminton Club in order to try and advance his skills. He competed in the 2017 Canadian Masters Badminton Championships in Winnipeg, MB as one of only 3 players entered in the 85+ category. He also had the distinction of being the oldest player competing at the tournament.

Stefan Carter at the 2017 Canadian Masters Championships (Photo credit Orlando Athayde)

Dr. Carter decided in 1981 that he would like to take up the sport of badminton and went to play at the River Heights Badminton Club. After playing he "was hooked and addicted" to badminton. He has spent the time since playing in many different clubs throughout Winnipeg trying to improve his badminton skills. He credits many people with help along the way including Archie Chawla, Greg and Lindsay Blamey, Khan Mai and Dan Savard. One person in particular he credits is Mike duBois who has "never given up on me and always plays with me".

One of the things Dr. Carter talks about when talking badminton is the spirit of badminton people and how not only is badminton a great exercise but the social part of interacting with others on the court is "more important than you think". He says that playing in the Canadian Masters was a fantastic experience and would have been even if there wasn’t badminton involved because of the people he met.

Dr. Carter believes that being active is important and tries to do this by playing several times a week. His current goal in badminton is: "making one or two good shots in an evening makes my day!"

Dr. Carter is not only an avid badminton player he is also a remarkable individual. He survived the holocaust to make his home in Winnipeg in 1948. He became a doctor and served on the faculty staff at the University of Manitoba for over forty years as a vascular specialist. He is featured in the Canadian Museum for Human Rights and has written a book chronicling his life’s experiences.

Dr. Carter definitely shows that badminton is a Sport for Life. The MBA and the badminton community are delighted to recognize Dr. Stefan Carter with the MBA Sport for Life award as he is a role model and inspiration for all to maintain an active lifestyle for healthy living.

Members of the badminton community are invited to see the presentation on Wednesday November 7th at 7:30pm. It will be taking place at the River Heights Badminton Club in the River Heights School (1350 Grosvenor Ave.). Come out and talk to one of the badminton community’s avid players.

Respect in Sport Certification

October 31, 2018

All coaches, athletes or parents wanting to coach at tournaments this year now need to have a current Respect in Sport Certification.

If you haven’t already, please be sure to take the Respect in Sport course at the link provided below.

It is a free online course that is mandatory for all our coaches to take who wish to coach on court at Badminton MB sanctioned events or programs.

This is mandated by our governing body Sport Manitoba for the protection and safety of all the coaches and athletes in sport, and they WILL follow up with us to make sure that all our coaches are following through with this requirement, and any disobedience to this requirement will be reflected in an evaluation of our sport funding.

Coaches who present their RiS Certification and Current Valid MBA Membership will receive a temporary coaching accreditation at MBA Sanctioned Tournaments.

Only those who have this pass will be allowed to coach on court at tournaments.

Thank you for your participation in making our sport safer for everybody.

Badminton Manitoba is excited to announce it’s 3-year exclusive partnership renewal with Yonex Canada, distributor for the leading badminton equipment provider in the world.

Manitoba Badminton Association is pleased to announce that Yonex Canada is our exclusive sponsor for the next three years.

This partnership has been going strong for over 10 years now because of the faith that Yonex has in growing badminton in Manitoba, and because of the hard work and effort by Manitobans to do exactly the same; grow badminton in Manitoba! This partnership allows MBA to offer additional benefits to registering your club with MBA, hosting a tournament, and/or participating in a program. It fleshes itself out in one of two ways, A) Providing more product to the club and/or member and/or participant, and B) It lowers the cost of registration/participation

We have seen the quality that Yonex products provide and know that it is tried tested and true. There is no comparison to the quality of their shuttles, and we are proud to use the AS50 feather shuttle for our premier level tournaments, and the Mavis 350 nylon for our Rural Super Series and Gold Series tournaments. We know that our participants will be playing with the best shuttle in the world when they come to these tournaments. The same shuttle that they use at BWF Superseries level tournaments.

If you have not been, please visit Yonex Canada’s website at http://yonex.com/

or follow them on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/YonexCanada/

Withdraw from Main Round: If an athlete withdraws from the event after the draws have been posted, or fails to show for a scheduled match – that player will be withdrawn from the tournament. Partners in a paired event will not be penalized.

Concussion Protocol: https://www.badminton.ca/file/814564/?dl=1

Tournament Description

You are invited to the 7th Annual Yonex Eastman Open, a nylon (plastic) shuttle tournament for local badminton players in the East/South/Winnipeg Regions to play with and against Rural Manitobans in a friendly environment. This is the best opportunity for players to try a tournament for the first time because the top provincial players typically do not play in this tournament, meaning closer competition for beginners and intermediate players.

As well, there will be many athletes that are part of the Manitoba Winter Games Teams competing so there is a chance to see and play these athletes.

All players are expected to bring their own racquet and proper indoor footwear and active clothing.

All draws and draw times are posted online at the same website that registration occurs. Results and Draw times are also posted on site at the tournament.
