Western Canadian Team Championships
The Western Canadian Team Championships is one of the few competely TEAM based badminton competitions in Canada. The tournament is typically conducted through team work between Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia, however, entry into the competition is still possible from Nunavut, Yukon and Northwest Territories. Each of the provinces rotate who hosts the tournament with the host Province being elgible to enter TWO teams. The 2017 Western Canadian Team Championships will be held in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
The 2017 competition will have a few changes from previous years. The largest change being the addition of a U19 category. The team competition will now also consider the U15, U17 & U19 categories to be separate competitions. The competition format will also change to be 1 Boys Singles, 1 Girls Singles, 1 Boys Doubles, 1 Girls Doubles and 1 Mixed Doubles (not necessarily in that order). This new format better reflects larger team competitions like the Canada Winter Games. To increase the importance of this competition even more each age category winner will win a cup. The cup names are Clarkson Cup, Paulson Cup and the newly created Dawson Cup, named after Manitoba badminton great Jamie Dawson.
Due to the importance of this event and the importance of doubles to be a successful team the tryout process has changed to reflect that. The tryout will take place over two days; Saturday, November 12th and Saturday, November 19th. Make sure to examine the TEAM SELECTION CRITERIA to fully understand the tryout process.
The deadline for entry is November 1st, 2016.
